I think it's about time I got my driving license sorted, I did a few lessons a while back but then I got my bike license so I stopped Laughing

I'm thinking of doing one of those one week intensive courses the same way I did my bike test (except that was only 3 or 4 days) or should I just do the normal way of one or two lessons a week? Which is better

I would ask....

How confident were you at driving before quiting and sticking with the bike.

If very confident, then get the theory out of the way and book a short course of lessons.

By definition, we all learned to drive either one way or the other so aren't qualified to say which approach is better.

Gut-feeling is your friend here. Or if your guts won't say anthing flip a coin.

I started to 'learning' to drive in march - been doing 3/4 hours a week (so thats £70/80 w)
Cut down to 2 hours a week (in a single sitting) and was as happier with that. Not just because of the money, but it gave me more to time to think about and let what i'v learned sink in. I have my test next month, and feel like it'l be fine.

As you'v been driving a bike, your road sense will be fine, The only thing that would be different it space judgement, and the controls! Oh, and don't do a life saver every time you turn in a car, i get the urge to EVERY TIME - and i'v only done 3 hours on a bike Laughing

If found that after a while my brain didn't want to take in any more and i started unlearning things, or at least getting things wrong because i had too much to remember. An hour lesson every other day would work very well i think.

I would disagree - especially towards the end.
By the time you go out, start a mock test and do a reverse park, you'v just about got time to make it back home. 90 mins is a nice amount of time, just gives you enough to do something and get back.

I found that 4 hours a week made me drive worse, And that 2/3 is perfect.

All depends on the person tho Wink

Hmm interesting, when I did it before I did 1 or 2 lessons a week which were 1 to 2 hours long.

I'm not sure if it's even worth it because I can't get insured on anything! I suppose it's good just to get it out of the way

I find 1 hour lessons kinda of pointless :/ You just get in the car, do a tiny bit, then go home. Kinda learning something but not practicing.

1.5/2 hour lessons seem about right for me. Although 2 of those a week was TOO much money, and made me drive worse xD

I was doing 4hours a week for sometime. Between getting my car provisional, I'd passed within 4months, but it had cost me a fortune in the long run and didn't get my anywhere since insurance is a piss-take. At least I automatically had my provisional bike license from it, which without, I'd have never got on the road.

I just took 6 hour long lessons then took my test. I failed though. I booked 1 more lesson and test combo and failed again. Then I booked another single lesson and test combo and passed. It was cheaper to fail a couple of tests than have the 20 odd lessons they wanted to sell me.

There were mitigating circumstances for my first fail but the second was probably my fault. At least, I blamed myself as I rounded a bend on a piece of dual-carriageway, doing a healthy 60mph, to see a massive sign proclaiming, "YOU ARE STILL IN A 30MPH LIMIT".

You can learn on a test but you can't pass on a lesson. Thumbs Up

I'm of the opinion that lessons are a big scam.

I basically taught myself, in a family member's car, using the DSA hand book. Passed first time. I did the test in a Passat.

Driving instructers, an dthe driving instruction industry, will convince you that learning to drive is a "big challenge". It isn't. If you've a little road sense, and a little common sense, it's actually a piece of piss.

This is probably pretty close to the truth. I wouldn't waste money on loads of lessons. Get through it short and sweet like the bike test, as said above: it's cheaper to fail a couple of times and learn from it than to have endless expensive lessons. I had about 8 lessons, 2 hours each, and passed. The skill of driving a car comes quickly enough, the rest is common sense tbh.

I passed my car test on Monday (one week today). I had 17 hours of lessons (8 two hour lessons, and one hour before my test). Passed first time, 4 minors.

It is fairly common sense to be honest, if you've been riding before it'll be ok.

I'm exactly the same! So you can imagine my utter disdain at failing MOD 1 once and MOD 2 three times! Rolling Eyes

But I knew I wanted to get on the bike, so after I had my tears and tantrums I picked myself up and just kept doing it again, which was very difficult when you don't deal with disappointment very well tbh!

How long have you been riding? and (be honest with yourself) is your riding any good?

If it is then Roadsense/observations etc should be ok from the bike (although you see tonnes of people riding like they want to die) and it should just be the manoeuvres etc you need to practice. If not then do a bit more - get some recommendations for an instructor, ring one and go out in a car for a bit (I'm assuming you don't have access to your own).

FWIW I (way before my bike test) did 2 hours a week, but that was on top of driving to & from college (mum worked just down the road) and to the shops, town etc - probably about 6+ hours a week practice on top of lessons for 2 months passed 1st time with 1 minor.

Driving lessons are only worthwhile if you find the right instructor!

It depends on your ability, but you most probably wont be wanting to have a 30+ hour course.. and today we are going to be 'Moving off and stopping..' 'But I already know how to...'

'Well we must follow the course, '

'GTFO'

Laughing

In the end I found a really nice guy and had 12 lessons with 2 before the test to brush up, most of my learning - controls etc was with my dad in my car, job done Thumbs Up
