Seriously, how anyone can happily live in a flat is beyond me.

With my recent career move taking me to Leeds I've rented a flat for 6 months in a supposed professional area, but every night/morning there is some dick-head from one of the flats slamming a door or yelling or dragging furniture across the floor.

It's not like it's just one flat so I can ask them to keep it down, it's every frickin' one of them around me. It's as if I'm the only person who knows how to respect other peoples right to a peaceful life.

No point to this rant, just having a moan. I've still got my house in Newcastle so I'm going to go back there on weekends, but I shouldn't have to pay £675 a month rent and only spend 2/3 of my time there.

Any flat lovers out there want to try and defend them? Laughing

There's one guy below me who's hobby seems to be door slamming and shouting. Especially after 10pm. Fortunately he only seems to pop up every 3-4 months for a good door slamming session then buggers off again. Apart from that it's pretty quiet around here.

O, and the twat that plays Sean Paul out of his window on a summers day.

I guess it depends on the people in the block, and the age of the build.
We're in an apartment block of 6.
Mortgage, so it's also a comitment. Laughing
Quite lucky that the neighbours are all sound. Thumbs Up

Upstairs, I hear occasionally, but very rarely.
Other than that, we rarely have an issue.

Biggest issue for me is having to drive 7 miles to my garage where my bikes are.

It's a new block (2 years old) so I would have thought noise pollution laws would have meant it was a little sound proofed, but I guess no matter how well built it is you still hear door slams.

Maybe I've been spoiled by having lived in houses for the last 10 years, but I seem to hear every little noise and can't see myself ever getting used to it.

I used to have a neighbour - piano teacher. Could deal with her, but my God during lessons it was a nightmare. Honestly, I could only respond with my HiFi. Since I moved into a house - life is a dream .. apart from doing the lawn Smile

I hate my flat. Mrs Pinky and I are at our wits end and are saving like mad to get out of the shithole we live in.

Neighbour downstairs used to be at the door before I arrived demanding mrs pinky put her kids to bed at 7pm. He's a bully and hasnt been seen since I moved in.

Neighbour upstairs from us thinks the council rules of being considerate to your neighbours doesnt apply to her and as a result we get DIY at all hours day and night, Loud music from the moment she wakes up until the moment she goes out clubbing. Then she comes back with her mates and parties until 5am and not once does the bully from downstairs go near her.

When they arent partying upstairs they are arguing and she sounds like beaker from the muppets. Their arguments tend to go along the lines of.... "Char you stupid cnut." "Dont call me a cnut ya cnut." "I'll call you a cnut if I want ya cnut." They cant do anything quietly from moving chairs in the kitchen, to walking, to closing doors and even peeing.

Neighbours across the way, well she's got her boyfriend living there who is the father of her 4th kid, no idea who owns the other 3 but he screams at them at all hours, night and day and has drug dealers at the door threatening them every other week. As a result of him shouting at the kids the kids only know how to communicate with each other in the same shouting and screaming voice. Their snotty nosed kids used to call on ours constantly and then steal her bike, scooter, throw stones at her and as a result ours is now a prisoner in her own home because we daren't let her out to play with them because she always ends up in tears.

Neighbour downstairs across the way is an alcho and rarely seen or heard. We wish they were all like that. Upstairs across the way we get along with pretty well.

Cleaners come round almost daily and their task is akin to pissing against the wind with the flats, broken glass, food waste and beer cans all thrown down in the yard outside where the kids play and, believe it or not, used tampax tubes once found outside.

Sounds extreme but welcome to my world. As a result we cant wait to get out of here.

To top it all, the flat is covered in mold and nothing we can do gets rid of it. The council sent a guy round to sort it out last winter and the shit grew over the anti fungal paint they put on the walls. They then claimed it was lifestyle which is hard to believe because every flat in the block is suffering the same from the glimpses we've seen.

Truth if the matter is we complain as much as we can, we make a nuicense of ourselves to the council and they talk to you as if you have no right to complain and deserve to live in the shit here.

This is where pinky waits for the "Rent privately" brigade or "buy a place" brigade. The answer is simply, thats what we are trying to do. hence the saving.

Lol flats.

They only seem to build more and more flats these days, cram people in like sardine tins and charge them a disproportionate amount for the privilege!

Eventually we'll all be living on top of/next to each other, it's THE MAN trying to keep you down.

But seriously, I moved out into a nice stone victorian terrace, spent a brief period of 6 months in a flat and I don't look back! Can't hear my neighbours, don't have to interact with them or even consider them.

I've not been anywhere near leeds city center since they started building a million flats for a million people that could never ever afford them...

WE were living in a flat b4 we made the move to suburbia. For the small % uplift in rent, we get the whole garden( so no wanky bbq's full of unknowns till 2 am), your own garage ( so your bikes are safe), no one below or above ( so the wife gets decent sleep after shift work, she's not Ringling me up in the office at lunchtime because some pr!ck upstairs is doing building work after she's done a 14 hour night shift at the hospital)

Neighbours are such a lucky dip, I'd really struggle moving back into a flat. Some mates prefer a flat because its in a "trendy" area. Fuck that, i dont care if it is a 500k flat, you still get up on a morning to find tramps piss in your doorway....

Not all people that live in flats have people like that as neighbors. My neighbors as ghosts and dont make to much noise just the odd pulling of furniture that dosnt exist of some foot steps at night. Cant complain. Most the building I am in is deselect. On one side up and down theres someone but you cant hear them walls are to thick. Really does depend where you live.

Before we had kids my good lady wife and myself spent a year in Mixenden flats (Halifax - anybody from those parts will know them...). We were on the 7th floor of a typical 1960s tower block and our balcony overlooked the estate. The neighbours were perfect as we never saw them, just the occasional sound of bodies being dragged across the floor following drug deals that went wrong. Summer was the best time - we spent many a happy evening with a Pimms on the balcony watching the local constabulary chasing chavs around the estate... Flats - you can't beat 'em!

I feel your pain. I have lived in 6 different flats since I left home and not one of them has been peaceful. I mean, what are the chances? You'd think at least one would have been quiet.

No I'd say the newer the flat the thinner the walls. It keeps costs down and profit margins up.

Just be grateful youre not in student halls of accomodation.
Then you'd know rage.
Mainly the yelling outside (I was on the inside of like an inclosed courtyard, on the top floor, so its like an ampitheatre) at 4am.
And the walls are paper thin. I could hear every sex act going on with my 2 neighbours. Bcus I just enjoyed being woken up at sillyo'clock to some random girl moaning & groaning.

My flat is fine Laughing

Living room = bedroom.
Bedroom = projector room/gaming room.
Kitchen big enough to home half of India.
Other bedroom rented to mate.

Noise isnt too bad and I live bang in the centre of town.
Bikes are parked outside, but can be safely stored inside the physical building.

I have no issues with flats, apart from lazy arse pizza/chinese/indian delivery guys.. who are "too scared" to park on a private road.. Laughing

Mount a speaker against the wall, and play German Oompha Band music at them. If they complain, apologise and say "sorry, something keeps waking me up and I can only go back to sleep listening to the greatest hits of Otto von Bratwurst and His Mighty Bavarian Horn".
