PostPosted: 19:00 - 15 Sep 2011    Post subject: Decided I want a new guitar Reply with quote

I've just glanced across at my arsenal and come to the conclusion that I want to start saving up for a new guitar.

Trawling the 'bay, I stumbled upon: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Kitz-Kits-Kit-DIY-Guitar-Self-Assembly-LP-Style-/230642066685?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item35b356a4fd

Would anyone say these are any good?

It could be interesting and give me something to do for a few nights. Also, would it be possible to swap out the inevitably substandard pickups for some nicer ones?

Just curious.

Cheers,

Steve.

I wouldn't expect great things but it looks a lot of fun to do.

Wouldn't trust it personally. Certainly as you can buy a fair one for £140.

Spent £245 on mine, love it, with the warranty it's piece of mind.

I agree with Nex and your first point, actually.

Might get on GAK and take a butchers.

I bought one a couple years back, pretty naff. Lots of parts missing (place I bought it from replaced the missing parts), shoddy electrics and neck didnt join up with the body properly so it was almost impossible to set up well. Knocked out of tune if you so much as farted at it.

I have a few guitars ranging from crap to excellent. I still have my 72 Strat which I bought from new and some other nice ones.

However, the best, and I mean best, value for money guitar which I own is an Aslin Dane (335 copy). Probably made in Korea (alongside Gibsons) and bought off ebay. Not expensive.

Look out for one and don't bother with these "build your own" jobs. They might be all right (I have no idea) but lots of guitars are "all right".
Take my advice and either buy and old classic or an Aslin Dane. Then you'll feel good Cool

That's a nice guitar. Thumbs Up

Basswood body and bolt on neck doesn't sound like a good combo for what is meant to be a "Les Paul" copy.

I haven't played guitar for a while now, I have two Gibsons (SG New Century and Les Paul Double Cut)

I remember looking with a mate for a cheaper guitar before and I was really impressed by this thing;

https://www.heybrookmusic.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/q/squier_vm_tele_custom_ll_vb.jpg
https://www.heybrookmusic.co.uk/squier-vintage-modified-teler-custom-ii-blonde.html

With inflation it's bit more expensive than when I played one a couple years ago - but £209 delivered on that website still seems a pretty good deal.

The pickups are about as good as you'll find on a cheaper guitar, Duncan designed P90's, they were quite hot if I remember correctly.

Gibsons are made in the States - and their quality is variable. Mine needed work straight out of the case!

Buying a guitar online is a dodgy business. Just because you have played a Fender / Gibson / Sadowsky / whatever in a shop doesn't mean that another one of the same model will play the same.

You can't beat going into a shop and playing the guitar you actually buy.

Also - take into account the setup. It might be an awesome instrument with a crap setup which detracts from how it plays.

I've swapped out the pickups on my Epiphone Les Paul for better ones. Requires a soldering iron and a little patience. If I can do it anyone can. I wouldn't buy a build-your-own guitar just to do that.

I'm half tempted to build my own guitar (come up with something totally unique) but I'd buy a Squier Strat or something as a starting point and disassemble it, rather than buying a kit.

Is that all? Laughing Your Mrs wont like me then, I've lost count I think

Ibanez RG270
Ibanez SA something
Ibanez cheapo Iceman(IC300?)
Ibanez Iceman (72 I think, tis old)
Ibanez Jem
Gibson Les Paul
Gibson Exlporer
Epiphone Gothic Flying V (dreadful guitar)
Strat copy
Telecaster copy
BC Rich Warlock or something, shit guitar I hate it
Washburn Dime proper one
A Jackson I think, somewhere
Washburn N4 (also building a couple as well, about 3 to build)
Kramer EVH 5150 (nom nom nom)
Burns Brian May
Schecter C-1 which is falling apart Crying or Very sad
5 maybe 6 or more strat copy custom builds
Another BC Rich Warlock thing but built from scratch with BC Rich parts
Few acoustics

Honestly I have lost count.

As for buying a shitty build it yourself kit, don't bother, built a few and you should be spending close to that much for a decent body, then a bit more for a decent neck, I honestly wouldn't bother, buy something prebuilt

2 years ago, I decided to make myself a guitar. Ended up with 2. The one I made, and the one made from the spare parts I didn't use.

Wife was less pleased.

If I was making a les paul, it'd have to be a set neck, and a really nice top on a mahogany body.

www.DIYGuitarShop.co.uk have some nice looking kits. I really want a spalted maple topped les paul, but it'd have to be a r4eally nice one.

Go to a guitar shop and play a load until you find one that just feels right. If you dont, go to another shop until you do.

Consider a 7 string Laughing I've got one, playing a 6 is now like holding a toy.

One of the few guitars i've own that I truly like playing.
Spent silly money on some years back, Ibby Prestige and a razorback...but still, nothing feels like my 7 string does.

Another great guitar, Schecter C1 Hellraiser. Sold that to my mate, still play it now and then, but it was fantastic!

I can't play it as its too wide (neck) and get confused with too many strings Embarassed

C7 Hellraiser? Has kinda "cross" shaped inlays? I sold mine to the local music shop a while ago, that thing was immensely fantastic. Big regrets in selling that.

You soon get used to the 7th string, the neck is an issue for some, personally I shred that thing better than a 6 Laughing

Never played the Omen, its a Schecter so I hold out some hope that its a good one.

The 8 is slightly overkill Laughing

Yep. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Although i did have a couple of guitars mailed to me and ended up buying one.

I have over 12 guitars of varying quality. I only play the decent ones now.
Might whip out one of the rough ones for a particular track i'm recording (used a westone mx cos the bridge pickup is so noisey and prefer the 4th position on a mex strat compared to my strat plus...go figure)
But generally speaking i enjoy playing the high quality ones, my acoustic is just starting to open up after 9yrs and it makes me very happy each time i pick it up..you are unlikely to get that from a cheapo make it yourself kit....IMO obviously/ Wink

Scrimp and save...the wait is worth it. I'd run back into a burning house for 3 of my guitars..Thinking .maybe 5

^^^Indeed..and quite playable for the price. (i got a new 300 for £150 when they came out) The 12string emulation isn't upto scutiny, but put it in a live situation or in a mix and it's other modes are very believable.
With the software you can interchange pickups and positions..even the type of pots..then upload to the guitar.

Dressed the frets when it came. It feels quite similar in the hands to a slim C-shaped neck.
