Just finished a two weekend bike-safe course with Gloucestershire Police.
I was picked up on riding too close to the car in front and how much smoother, and faster, I could ride if I stayed back and increased my visiblity. Also managed to use counter-steering for the first time.

Absolutely brilliant time with professional riders for £20. If anyone get's the chance of one of these courses grab it with both hands Very Happy

You have never gone round a bend at more than 20 MPH before?

Blimey, two weekends? I got a few hours of lecturing on stuff that I mostly already knew, then they palmed us off on the local IAM for assessed rides (which I've since heard mostly didn't happen).

Well worth the £0 that I paid for it (tea and biscuits included), but a bit of national consistency would be nice.

I did 1 day, I was enjoyable interesting, most of it I already knew but the positioning stuff was really interesting I always 'racing lined' the corners.

When the report came back I got 2 A's apparently that is very rare, my instructor said my machine control was probably better than his Cool

He said my rear observations where dire, I said I'm usually going fast enough not to need them. Laughing

Sometimes when I'm really going mad I've hit 30 mph on some bends Laughing

It was the first time I've consciously used countersteering to correct my path going round a bend. Bit frightening at first but when I got the hang of it it was great

It's still a steal at that price compared to professional training, but you'll get much the same benefit from reading Roadcraft, doing a free IAM or RoSPA assessed ride then having a chat afterwards.

Sadly, charging anything at all is likely to put off the Yoofs who would benefit the most.

Is that the one held at the gloucester fire station? I was meaning to get myself on these as a bit of a reality check. I did one about 7 years ago when I was on my 125 days. I've certainly gotten a lot more reckless since then! What routes do they take you down? forest of dean or more towards the cotswolds? Is it 2:1 ratio for riders/police instructor?

I'd be interested to hear this as well.

West Mercia, in their wisdom, don't offer Bikesafe. They do something else which looks ballbag in comparison so Bikesafe with Gloucs appeals Cool

Yep, we met at Gloucester Fire Station. Most of the students went off on a 2 to 1 basis with a Police rider or IAM Assessor. I was really lucky that the person who was meant to be with me never turned up so I had 1-2-1 training.

Route we took was...

1. Out of Gloucester on A40 to Ross on Wye where we had the 1st assessment stop.

2. A449 to Ledbury, then A438 to Tewkesbury for 2nd assessment stop.

3. A46 Teddington to B4077, up Stanway Hill, through Ford, turning right just after to Cotswold Farm Park for 3rd assessment stop.

4. Carried on unclassified road to Bourton on Water and turned right on A429 and right again on A436 through Andoversford to Seven Springs.

5. Picked up A417 back into Gloucester for the final assessment.
