So, a massive two weeks after its service and MOT, my everyday Kawasaki is trying to kill me.

Something (had a proper look around and cannot see what) is dripping oil onto the back wheel, and from there onto the side wall and the tyre...

That was a fun ride in, in the wet this morning.

Slip, slide, slither. Heart in mouth stuff.

Garage tonight.

More money. Stupid, expensive bikes. Laughing

It looked very oily last night on my finger, but I've since noticed the spot on the swing arm under the rear caliper... if I had to say, i'd suggest it was too dark for brake fluid, more like engine oil.

What's the chances it's damaged the tyre, though? Confused

Wont have damaged the tyre, just wash it off... I know this sounds mental but have you tried.. CLEANING THE BIKE Laughing

Surely it will become apparent where the leak is coming from when its spotless and you suddenly get a dark patch Wink

I've cleaned the tyre last night, that's just from an 8 mile ride this morning.

Tyre specialist on Twitter says that with that sort of contamination, the tyre should be changed. Sad

It's only started the last few days or so (I think), so not had a chance to clean it yet! Very Happy But even so, can't see any obvious drips. Bloody thing.

My tyre was covered in a fair bit more oil than that... fork oil and engine oil...

Not sure if you remember Binge posting a photo of his YZ450F with oil covering the entire rear tyre after it dropped the oil whilst riding Laughing Just clean it off, it will be fine Thumbs Up

Very Happy

Yeah, tbh, anything I can do to avoid replacing a couple of month old tyre will be done. Really could do without having to replace that.

Then don't. Of course a guy who's in the business of selling tyres is going to tell you to replace it, using whatever technobabble he feels will be persuasive. It's your napple weave, mate, it goes out of strum, gets all... midichlorians... in it.

Except he already knows I wouldn't buy the tyre from him anyway... when that one went on, his words were "I couldn't beat that price" for the rubber itself.

Other than that, you're spot on.

I'll see how it looks cleaned up once whatever is leaking is fixed, first. If the tyre looks badly degraded, I'll change it, because I ride 'em pretty hard on that bike. If not, I'll keep that one.

Nah, it's just a flat seat bottom. It's an odd one, I had a good look around last night, in the dry, no obvious leaks, dribbles... anything. But it's coming from somewhere!

Which way are your breather/overflow hoses routed?
Is one of them flapping around on the swingarm, instead of being secured in place?

My guess would be it's coolant - follow the overflow tube from the expansion tank - it often vents somewhere in the rear cowling. Coolant is slippy.

In the first pic there does appear to be a wet patch around the rear brake line banjo.

If it was me I'd just give it a taste.

P.s. I know the potential health risks but I couldn't give a toss.

If it tastes like the most bitter dry and salty crap you can imagine it is brake fluid.

You should be able to feel oil without tasting it, but it tastes like someone crapped on a burnt french fry if you truly can't resist.

If it tastes sweet but a touch salty it is coolant

If it tastes like piss then a dog has marked his territory.

If it tastes like sweet piss then you have a diabetic dog in the vicinity.

My guess would be you need to take a close look at the swingarm. Wink

There's a damp spot, but nothing obviously leaking.

There's also nothing under the bike where it's been parked all morning. Nor was there anything on my garage floor where it'd been parked all night, so whatever it is is coming out slowly, not gushing or even dripping...

I'm not tasting it, it'll ruin my coffee. But on my finger, it looks, smells and feels like engine oil (ie, is black, viscious, can feel it causing cancer* and Americans tried to take it off me at gunpoint*).

Fuck it, this is what garages are for! Smile

*last couple in that list may not be true.

Didnt you know Hellbound? Donny is addicted to brake fluid.

We say he's addicted, he denys it and says he can stop at any time.

I'll get my coat.

It does look dark/wet under that caliper, worth taking it off and having a look to see if any seals are leaking.

The swingarm fills up with water and the drainage hole is at the back underneath by the chain adjuster. The drip is actually starting at the wheel and running on the tyre. Its just shitty rusty water.

Indeed. Bit of a design fault with these.

We did think so too, to start with. Only, it's not.

It's at the garage, anyway. Fun ride last night, slithering about with cars right against my back tyre!

They think it's brake fluid from the caliper...

This I don't understand. Even if it was oil it's hardly enough for you to even notice so why are you slithering around?
