Hey, as the title says, I have 3.5k to spend and a dislike of sports bikes.

Sports tourers that are fast and fun, supermotos and 'muscle' bikes are what I'm into. I have a car for everyday use, but when summer comes around I'd like to commute by bike ideally. I don't like sports bikes, I have a weak right wrist and shoulder and it hurts them a fair amount.

I'm toying with the idea of buying a husaberg fs650, however the maintenance is putting me off. Been looking at aprilia sxv550s but I know nothing about them and they are quite expensive, rode one around a roundabout one time, seemed fun. In theory more reliable, but it is aprilia? I keep saying I mean to get into greenlaning, however I never actually get around to it.

I just wrote off a cb1100 x11 (naked blackbird basically) while I loved it's power, size and touring ability, fuel economy and ease of riding, I want something a little bit more flickable in the lanes.

I liked the old RF900 series, had two of them but they are expensive and dated now for what they provide. Basically I don't know what to buy and want to not impulse buy this time!

Any ideas?

If you don't mind the stigma of a Ducati badge, you can get a decent monster S4 for that money. Very nimble and a bags of grunt. Tank range isn't great and the clutch is heavy in slow traffic, but if you get one with termis, you can't help but get drunk on the noise it makes. They're very easy on the eyes too.

Biketrader throws this one up

To clarify, a tiger is not ideal for me, I either want big and lardy, or small and punchy, not an inbetween Laughing

I don't like monsters, rode a m600 dark for 2k miles commuting, it was shite.

Would consider a 1050, but again expensive. It's hard to find a trustable review of the aprilia svx, was hoping someone on here had one.
Flatmate used to have a mille, I presume a touno has the same engine? In general don't really like big twins.

I presume you mean SXV550?

If so avoid for road use. It's a competition spec bike with competition spec rebuilds IIRC.

Yes the Tuono shares the engine with the Mille and plenty of other parts as well.

Tdm 08 model is amazing never ridden it obviously but it was the first bike I ever went on. Amazingly comfy on the pillion seat and pretty neat at handling great brakes as well.

Unreliable pile of shite IMO. Great when its going but it was more maintenace intensive than my wife!

The alternator eat itself. It needed new rings (or should I say ring) at some stupidy low mileage. Wheelied fucking brilliant though. The owner (not me) had it on the back wheel on the A5 for over a mile!

Cruisers are not conducive to having fun in corners and wheelies as far as I'm aware, if I'm wrong, feel free to point out how so.

Ah, that explains why everyone on thumpertalk raves about the 550 (or 5.5 as they call it) but avoids questions on reliability.

I'm not big on KTMs, had two bad experiences with them. I don't like the styling of the TDM. Flatmate had a GSX650F, would have been a wonderful bike as a first bike, very forgiving and predictable.

How many horses do the original Vmax have? I could deal with one of those.

Only ridden one SM, Binge's YZ450F... thats mental Laughing Enough power to have a laugh with...in any gear Mr. Green

The only other that springs to mind is a DRZ, but you've had one?

A 1998 V-Max on paper is apparently 98hp with 100nm of torque. Shafty as well Thumbs Up

That'd be because all the gears are shorter than first gear on a lot of sports bikes Wink.

Oh and afraid a DRZ to a FS650 is a gs500 to a GSXR750.
If I was going for a powerful 'fun' supermoto for the road, the FS650 would be the one I'd choose. But only as an occasional toy.
