Instead of resurrecting an older thread (https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=229112) I thought I'd make a new one.

BLD came back with a repair quote at a whopping near 4 grand. The swingarm has a scratch on it so they wanted to replace it at a cost of £700...

I've argued the toss with them and said I'm happy for them to use aftermarket bits, as long as I know what they're putting on it. So here comes the question:

What's the best exhaust for an SV650s (2000 model)?

It's got to be road legal, E marked, brand new and have a warranty.

Thanks in advance!

Wut...

Why not have them write it off and get a bike that wont have a shit history and have non standard parts thus lowering its value anyway?! Seems a no brainer to get it written off Rolling Eyes

I'd see none of the money anyway... the finance company would. I'd only end up getting another bike on finance. I don't want to piss about getting another insurance policy either, as my current one is bought and paid for, and I'll leave the bike under the covers over winter gaining me no claims bonus.

Plus... I like my bike! I want to keep it!

True... but still, you are paying for a bike on finance thats now going to be worth a fair chunk less... in fact i'd be inclined to say you are literally throwing money away.

A crash that wasn't your fault... you seem to be the one taking it up the back passage in this case..

I wanted to change the can anyway, this seems like the perfect excuse to (and have it paid for!).
I can see where you're coming from, but I doubt the money I'd get from a write off would be less than what I'd be able to sell the bike for should it be all fixed up and nice and tidy(I'd hope?!). Some of the stock parts look like shit anyway... indicators, mirrors...

Either way I still want to keep the bike, it does what I need it to do and looks rather nice Smile.

Fair.

You would get the market value or a decent condition one.
Its only going to depreciate further while you pay it off anyway (I'd ask the finance company to reconsider your repayments as the vehicle is now worth a lot less)

Either way I still want to keep the bike, it does what I need it to do and looks rather nice Smile.

Thats the idea of a bike, glad its working for you... just hate to see money being thrown away... To get maximum value from it you should get all standard parts anyway, IMO that is.. a dealer likes good condition standard bikes.

Thank you for your feedback Smile. What do you mean reconsider payments? Basically reduce my interest?

Well essentially.. you started your finance with a "respectable condition" bike.

You now have what would be considered a cat c repaired bike.

The value is lower, either make the insurance cough up for the fact you now have a much lower value bike (argue £750 has been knocked off) and explain your are on finance and feel you are being raped* as the payments are for a bike thats worth far more than this damaged one

*use a better word.... im crap with words.

Wrong wilson.

And IMO, as much as you don't want to, I'd call the 4 grand and get something else.

Thumbs Up

It they don't write it off then it shouldn't be regarded as a write off, let alone on any register of write offs.

All the best

OK, how would he go about explaining the changes to the bike?

I just do not see the logic in having a bike thats been involved in a crash repaired whilst still paying money for it... Wouldnt mind if it was a private sale and whatever, it would get written off straight away.. no 2nd thoughts.

Also the swingarm... are they replacing that? Or are they letting you keep a main part of your bike damaged?

Hi

Unless an insurance company decides to write it off then it isn't on any register to be regarded as a write off. And just gets regarded as yet another tastelessly modified bike, along with all the others with aftermarket exhausts, double bubble screens, etc.

All the best

Keith

Swingarm isn't structurally damaged. It's "cosmetic" damage (that funnily enough I couldn't see when I looked at the bike.

I wouldn't get 4 grand for it, that's the latest official estimate... I'd be lucky to get 2.

Let insurance write it off. Give the finance company the money. Buy the bike back off the insurance company for £150, spend £50 putting it back on the road. Everyone's a winner Thumbs Up

When mine got written off they sold me the bike back for £150.
