Hey

Basically my boss wants to send me on a photography course for work.. Its near Reading... I've been there before in a company car, the journey back on a Friday at 5pm...was not the best. Swindon to Maidstone... took well over 4 hours due to the M25 Laughing

Upon reflection I could have got there quicker and got home quicker on the bike.

He has said im to use the company car... it gets far better MPG than the bike.. but I dont particularly want to be sitting in traffic on Friday night..

He seems against me using the bike, even though I turn up pretty respectably on the bike, shirt, tie, shoes and that...and I have bike gear over the top so its not going to get wrecked.

Is it just a company thing... He looked down on me when I offered to use my bike Confused I wasn't even going to bother to ask for petrol, just the convenience of the bike.

I "shouldn't" be complaining, i'm getting use of a brand spanking new car...but its just meh with traffic.

Any idea what I can say/help me in my bid to not join the dreaded M25 Laughing

Tell them to nob off and use the bike. Its your choice, they can't force you to use the car. Thumbs Up

Is your bike insured for business use? This may be an issue perhaps? I would take the bike anyway, your call what you choose to travel in or on! Rolling Eyes

Which means precisely fuck all, as you're not his boss. Wink

Has he actually said 'no'? Have you used the bike at all before on 'work' business?

I'd probably have just said that I was going to take the bike. I suspect he wouldn't say absolutely not, he probably just doesn't understand why someone would want to do that trip on a bike, in the cold & rain (potentially), rather than a car.

Be assertive man!

Take the car, find a hold up and sit there for a few hours, get late to course and have to go again at companies cost.

Tell him if you'd taken bike you'd have been there well on time.

Have you asked if he has a problem?

Getting to a course looking like you've been dragged through a hedge shouldn't be an issue, a course you are going to means you are a paying customer not the other way round.

Tell him it'll take 90 mins by bike, 4 hours by car and is the company paying for this time. If not, bike it is.

Also he may know that you will be bringing folders and what not away full of the coursework ?! Perhaps take the bike and DHL the crap they give you.

alternatively, tell him you promise to use the car, drive home, and get the bike. technically you havent lied.

Fair points above... No to business use, but commuting yes... meh I work for Honda, im commuting to a Honda agent.. same diff Laughing

He said he would want me to use the car (Honda dealer, Honda car etc..)

Was speaking to a guy in the Mazda dealership whos joined us, part of his contract stated if he was offered use of a company car, this must be used to and from work... something about representing the company etc.

Im guessing the Honda manager feels the same?

Assuming the course is a few days...

Day before the course starts, get a mate to drive the company car to Reading (you follow on bike), park near the course centre, pillion him/her home.

Then each day you bike it to reading. Hop in the car & drive a hundred yards to the course centre. Reverse procedure at the end of the day.

Then claim for car mileage & travelling time, should make a tidy profit.

This....

Your on company work periods of time, therefor you fall under the works company policy. You will not be insured to use the bike under the company policy.

"but I can argue im using my bike to go to a friends and not work"

Which is fine, but your company will still not want you to use the bike for a work day. You company can fall into lots of legal rubbish.

I've had the same discussion many times at work here. I can do that on my bike blah blah. Reality is the company still will not ever lket me use my bike during company time, we have cars, im insured on them all for a reason.

Going by your bosses reaction, save the hassle, take the car and suck up the trip home (99% chance you will leave early on the friday anyway).

Its a legal thing for your company. If you had an accident and got signed off, think about the compupance. You would be in loads of problems, not going to work, but then woul.d your company pay sick pay, as your not at work according the police accident form..... Then you've not been signed off for holiday etc... Then they see your on a work training course, on your own machine. Legal bumming time.

Use the car, save a lot of hassle, and loose maybe a little bit of your time. And anyway, what if your bike got stolen? No cover then. If your work car gets smashed by rioters, thats fine, its not your problem to worry about, its the works car and insurance.

Course is 8-5 both days... Last few I've been to end late... which is a bugger Neutral

I do see your point though!

Ahhh I added a bit more.

See, your moaning about your job, and your being sent on photography courses. Would love to be sent on one Laughing In fact, i'd just like a course I was promised 4 years ago please Sad Maybe a pay rise too. £500 doesn't match inflation for 4 years.

See, you aint got it bad really Razz

It's a job, not a hobby. If he doesn't see the sense in you getting there on time, suck it up, and start looking elsewhere. When you leave for more money and a better position, be sure to tell him why.

Except they probably can.
Definitely can if it's included in general 'company time'.

I made a point of generally travelling in 'company time' in a previous job because I was specifically 'office based'. People that were expected to travel normally had different contracts that said travelling wasn't part of their normal working hours etc.

He should have business use insurance too, I'm pretty sure.

However, yes - m4+m25 in rush hour = heaven (on a bike, but hell in a car).

If they are paying you for the course, paying you for the petrol, and paying you for the time away...then sod it, go in the car...and enjoy the perks!!!

If coming back afterwards is the problem, then make the return journey the perfect excuse to find the local B'roads. Karma

against a free car and free petrol?

get some tunes on and eat burger king whilst driving = winning.

I see what you are saying with regards to money... but I wouldnt mind using it say the first day and then just taking the bike the next as its friday...everyone just wants to get home, 200ish miles on a shagged racetec will be fine, cant really square it off much more Laughing

Lol, another rule is not eating/drinking in the car... Personally... im clean in a car...and they get valeted once a week...so im sure it will be fine Laughing

Im also curious as to what car i'll get... Laughing if its a shit Honda Jazz i'll be upset, a CRZ or a CRV/Accord will be nice... a Civic will just suck Laughing
