ZXR400 broken clutch

So I'm not afraid to admit it, I've made a mistake. I'm not sure what I've done but advice is welcomed to avoid it again!

I recently swapped the clutch basket on my zxr as the old one was rattling, after doing this the clutch wouldnt bite. I just got around to taking it apart to investigate and I found this:

I've obviously done something quite wrong!

Advice guys?

P.S if anyone has a spare I'm after one. Laughing

The clutch is supposed to rattle.... both my zxr's had noisy clutches.

They are not supposed to rattle, they just wear with age.

either way my old one was making such a racket it needed changing and seeing as I had a good quiet(ish) one I decided to swap it.

The problem is I somehow broke the bit in the picture, I just want to know what I did to cause that.

"Happens all the time" - What you've done is not tighten up sufficiently / not threadlocked the bolts that went through bits that snapped off. They shake themselves out and then that happens. You may get a clue that it's about to go if the clutch starts needing adjusted a lot or starts acting odd.

Actually it just happens once because you torque them up properly the next time and use some threadlock. Smile

I did torque them up and the bikes not been ridden since, engine only ran for about 5 minutes... the whole time which the clutch didn't work.
Therefore I'm not sure it anything to do with the bolts not being tigth enough.

are you sure about that?

me and the zxr400 owners club beg to differ.

Its a kwak, its a zxr, it will have clutch rattle.

You can tighten up the existing springs but they will just back off again after 5miles.

give it up.

Maybe but that's precisely what happens when the bolts come out. Did you have a clutch holding tool? If you didn't and were using one of the many alternate methods to stop the clutch rotating while you tightened it then you probably didn't get the bolts up to torque.

I'm not here to discuss whether a ZXR clutch should rattle, I know they all do but not the death rattle that I had. I've been around many, many ZXR's and out of all of them and the 2 that I've owned I've only ever heard 1 clutch rattle that sounded like this so I decided to swap the basket.

Ok, I'll bear it in mind. I'll double check the torque next time and make sure I use some threadlock just to avoid this if it was due to the bolts being loose.
