Just called up local Suzuki dealer, looking to get an oil and dust seal for the GSXR as its pissed out its fork oil again.

Need it for the weekend really, so was happy to pop down at lunch, thought I'd call and check they have them in stock.

No dust seals but do have the oil seal. The dust seal looks in perfect condition, hasnt done many miles, 400 at most. Its leaking so bad so I assume oil seal is dead and dust seal is just letting it pass.

They only stock gen suzuki parts, so I ask for the price of the oil seal.

£18.08 EACH!!!

I bought a pattern set for £20 both forks fully done with bushes.

Its a bit of rubber/plastic ffs Laughing

Obviously I need it now...as bike is borked as it is, fluid over tyre isn't fun. Is this common, never bought bits from dealers.. only ebay.

Still, not happy handing over £20 nearly for a poxy seal. Rolling Eyes

It is scandalous how they can charge for a piece of rubber and to hand over that much money would hurt.
I always try and get a alternative but if you need it strait away you get stung in the pocket I guess its how they make there money Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hang on, you're not just paying for the materials though. You're also paying for the shelf space, convenience, and for the decades of experience that it requires to develop the subtle blend of contempt, laziness, incompetence and the seething, deeply ingrained and barely suppressed visceral hatred of customers and oneself that marks out a veteran parts department stock monkey. Pay fuck all .... get fuck all is my philosophy when it comes to parts, £20 for a kit that last 400 miles or £60 to do a job properly and lasts x thousand miles ....

[EDIT] .... And it is not just a piece of rubber, it is a metal seal, which has a profiled rubber outer that is designed properly to seal the fork tube and the stanton, allowing a build up of pressure without failing. There is a lot more to it than you obviously realise.

Now i'm not saying that only genuine will do as there are some very good after market seals such as vesrah, but they come at a price too, cheap mass produces rubber seals will do nothing good but fail in the first thousand miles .... as you have found out!

You do hold a fair point... I did pay a low price.

I'm sill not chucking that sort of money at something so tiny Laughing I'll wait and try another brand of pattern.. its just the price difference, if they lowered it, say £10 a seal i'd do it... its still more than 2 pattern seals, but its urgent enough to warrant the extra few quid.

Some of them make the OEM parts-they are BADGE engineered into being bike manufacturers parts. Most larger bikes have forks made by third parties in any case-they sell their seals to suzuki etc etc and sell them spares. You pay the OEM and suzuki to buy a seal that is often available direct.

Plenty of decent reputable pattern part makers out there. I've never had a problem with the likes of vesrah as far as fork seals go. I wouldn't be surprised if the manufactured the badged parts in the first place.

Its amazing the false sense of security buying expensive parts gives some people. I'm not saying there isnt cheap crap out there, but it doesn't take a lot of effort to find money saving alternatives.

The seals were Nikkone... I've used on the older 125's.. but never on USD GSXR forks. One fork is fantastic and dry as a bone. The other is somewhat dripping.

Maybe it got knackered on the way in?

What did you put it in with? (like driver etc.)

Or were your forks pitted?

Pyramid Parts seem to always bring up for seals. Here are some that are for the Bandit

Forks are pristine. Put my one in with old fork seal, long driver and rubber mallet.

My dad did this one... Rolling Eyes But he is a mechanic and has done many before but obviously different to me Laughing

In my opinion, and it *is* only my opinion, I'd go for genuine seals every time. I've used pattern seals from Wemoto in the past and they're crap.

See, I've never used OEM seals.

Every bike thats needed the forks doing that my dad has done have been pattern, either pyramid parts or Nikkone.. never had an issue until now Sad

sumitomo make pipes for oil pipelines, sheet metal and are a manufacturer of gearmotors and speed reducers, including cycloidial gearing.
seals for brakes are not exactly their most well developed product.

nissin make electrical products such as flashes for cameras and also a wide variety of food products

brembo on the other hand make brakes and parts for brakes so I think they would be my first choice

Are you retarded? Nissin make a fucktonne of calipers for honda, kwak, suzuki and triumph.
Brakes are a bad example though because it's very trendy to have brembo rakes and ohlins forks, marcolotsofcash wheels etc.
Carbs are an example of things that are often labelled with the brand but are outsourced.

I will use wemoto for everything, seals, gaskets the whole lot

hardly retarded thankyou,
the point is brembo make brakes and parts for brakes thats it full stop.
they dont make pipes or food stuffs or anything else therefore it would be safe to assume they make good brakes and seals etc.

anyway this is about fork seals not brakes therefore is irrelevent.

I'd rather put Nissin Seals in my Nissin Callipers than Brembo ones.

Probably a good idea as Brembo use a different seal design to the Japanese brake manufacturers.
