Can a new employer find out your last salary?
E.G if I say I earn more than I do currently to get a larger pay jump when changing company?
Agency has put me in an uncomfortable position where they have said i earn more than i do because previous applicants have been offered close to their current salary.
The job I am going for is quite a big pay increase... Don't want to get there and then they find out, and I get sacked for dishonesty or something.

They'll probably be able to work it out when you hand in your P45 for them to put you on their payroll... ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

How annoying, that had been plying on my mind how easy it would be for them to find out.

No worries, I've emailed the agency telling them i'm not comfortable lying to the company, telephone interview at 5:30...
Not sure what to do if they mention current salary, drop the agency in it and say they lied? ____________________ https://www.tartycarper.co.uk |

Yes.
I used to work for a recruitment agency. Hated them. By gaining a higher salary for you, they'll get a larger fee and more commission in their pockets.
If it get's found out, the only person who really loses is you. They lose a bit of cash, you lose your job and are made to look a c*nt. ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

I'll do that then, I didn't even ask him to say that !
If they think i'm worth the money then they'll pay me it, not going to end up looking like a nob.

If they ask about your current salary, tell them what you're looking for.
If pressed on it, you can answer with whatever your P45 will show, but say that you're well overdue for a pay review, and/or have been told that your salary is due to rise to £FICTIONAL_AMOUNT, so that's your basis for comparison.
Don't sweat it too much: consider whether the person doing the interviewing and the person doing payroll are likely to even compare notes. Once they've gone through the process of interviewing and hiring, they won't go looking too hard for evidence that they screwed up and made the wrong decision. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I just told him straight, answered all of his technical scenario questions and when he asked if i had anything to ask, told him what i currently earn, he said what he thought i earned.
Just said there must have been a mistake somewhere.
Didn't want that bugging me if it went well. ____________________ https://www.tartycarper.co.uk |

If it was the recruitment consultant that had told them your previous salary, I certainly wouldn't have brought it up.
They are known for being lying scumbags, so if it was brought up in the future, I couldn't see it coming back on to you.
In the first year you don't have many rights regardless of probationary periods these days, I believe.
However, yes, it is something that could be used against you at some future time - but only if they have it listed that you told them, I reckon.
I was a bit worried because previously my salary stated was soon after I'd been given a raise; so despite it being honest, the P45 was a fair bit lower. Nothing came of it, however, despite it being a very small company with HR/finance being one of the founders.

The recruitment people said that previous applicants had been offered a considerably lower salary to come close to their current one.
The position is for a set wage, or there about's, if they think i can do the job then i will be getting paid to do that, and should be paid accordingly.
My current salary shouldn't affect that as the pay is for the position.
I didn't want to have to lie to them about losing forms etc.
Judging by the responses I am obviously quite naive to this process of lying to prospective employers about your salary to earn more. ____________________ https://www.tartycarper.co.uk |

It's all a learning process i guess!
I've got an interview on Monday so will see how that goes and, if they make an offer, what it turns out to be.
I understand when you change jobs you pretty much expect to make a pay increase... I guess that because the job I am going for pays 7K more than I currently earn it puts me in the position of being honest and potentially getting less, or lying and getting more.
Still, it's all experience... ____________________ https://www.tartycarper.co.uk |
