Cannot stop listening to the intro on this. It has to be the best guitar tone I have ever heard and ever will hear. Nothing like the sound of a cranked Marshall in the hands of the young brothers!

The sound of Malcolm's guitar at 0.14 when he comes just about defines AC/DC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Sq7VfI5X90

On a side note, anyone know any nerdy details about Malcolm's set up? I know he's using his Gretsch, TV Jones pickups and his early Marshalls but can anyone elaborate on those for me?

I lol'd at "Young Brothers" Laughing

They're 54 and 55 in that clip.

Still got it though. Unfortunately their best songwriting days are far behind them.

No, I realised that. It was just how I first read it as the Y isn't capitalised in the first post.

Wasn't expecting that I have to say!

Got the good grove I like, will give some of their stuff a listen!

Yeah, sadly their song writing days are over but they have to be one of the best live bands you can see IMO!

This page lists types of equipment used, doesn't elaborate to the point of exact setup though. https://www.uberproaudio.com/who-plays-what/415-acdc-malcolm-young-guitar-gear-rig-and-equipment

If you use line 6 equipment, there's some pretty good presets out there on the net you can just download, either direct from the line 6 site or places like here https://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/how-to-capture-malcolm-youngs/

Although it's probably fair to say you'll never 100% capture somebody elses tone as they are generally a pretty personal thing due to playing style etc.

Of course. I've got pretty close on my bedroom marshall but I need to give the thing some real volume for it to work properly and I'm not sure my housemates will be best pleased Very Happy.

I've heard some of the line 6 stuff and have to say its pretty good!

With malcolm its all in his right hand and his strumming that defines him Thumbs Up

Yeah I've been a big fan of line 6 for some years now. I currently use one of these bad boys https://uk.line6.com/podx3pro/ running into an old trace elliot head that I've had for yonks now. I love it to death and there's not much I can't do with it.

Although from looking around, if you can get hold of a Gretsch Filtertron pickup, it can go some way to giving you the tone you want, see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdVUu9psICY
Think you could probably pick one up pretty cheap, although by the looks of it you'll have to come up with a better way of installing it than this guy did, as they are a different size to a regular humbucker, and the one in this guys vid, although functional, looks a bit of a pig!

When Angus plays that piece at the beginning of 'Thunderstruck' it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

This video has the actual amp settings Angus uses on his Marshall's.
Replicates the tone quite well.

One of those.
Horrid little amps IMO. Reminds me...must give mine away. The pots crackled after a year and the speaker is dire..even with a 12" Celestion it still doesn't punch. Mind you it's the Valvestate 8040 from the 90s....so maybe the newer models have improved.

what guitar amps do people have?
i hate the sound of mine.
my old house mate has a Roland cube either 15 or 20 can't remember, quite liked that one.
been looking at the line 6 spider IV 15watt. can get one of them for £80, which seems pretty decent. most of the time i end up playing through headphones to not piss off others in the house so i don't really need anything powerful.
any recommendations?

I'd be interested in it as something to have a little play about with? What did you want for it?

My little MG15DFX is pretty good, but the speaker is absolute shite. I've looked at replacing it with a 10" which would probably be better although it's only 4 ohms from what I remember.

Best thing with regards to you amp question is just to go and try a bunch. Line 6 make some pretty good stuff but I think for budget amps Marshall do good as well. They don't probably have the versility of the line 6 though.

What amp do you have currently?

I have a few amps..some valve some solid state/hybrids.

The Roland Cube..i haven't got, but often use a friends 60watt and gotta say nice amp..limited tones but well made.
For home use anything over 5 watts if it's a valve or 20 watts if it's solid state is overkill.

Orange..(if you like that warm fuzzyish tone) do some crackers. The Tiny Terror head is very good although very loud even on the 7watt setting...i use a Weber attenuator to keep the volume down...it allows me to drive the valves hard at low volumes.
Their Orange Crush range are affordable..got a crush10.... recommended...if you like the sound that is.(Their QC is up n down)

Modded a 5watt Epiphone valve Jnr..was a good amp..now excellent.

Used a Line6 pod XT and that was ok. < I did not add this link.

I only use my amps when i can't get the sound i want in GuitarRig.

I looked at the new Marshall Haze when it came out as I thought an all valve 15w head would be a winner.

I don't know weather it was me, but it took 40 mins to warm up and actually sound playable and even then it was really muddy for a Marshall.

I was playing at very low volumes so I expect with some crankage it would have been better but certainly couldn't justify the money on one!
