Okay, my bike's been stood for the last 5 months, covered, occasional turnover on the engine.

It all looks good, obviously I'm giving it a bit of a clean this weekend, replacing the sprockets/chain, otherwise giving a good check over.

The reason I'm replacing the chain, the back brake had siezed, so I've fixed that, and had stored the chain safely (so I thought) and some water got into the box and rusted one side of it. Still, it's only £40-odd quid to replace, not a major disaster.

The fork seals need doing, but I've arranged for them to be replaced prior to the MOT.

As it's my first ever MOT - what should/could I expect? My bikes an 08 YBR 125, and really nervous it will fail.

Test it, if it fails fix it and get it retested.

It's not really a big deal, retests are free if done within 10 days or so anyway.

Chain is only an issue if it is knackered, a bit of rust isn't a problem, seized links might be. Check the simple stuff like lights, horn, tyres etc and see how it does.

Links were pretty seized. Some sections were quite stiff, needed both hands to straighten.

One other question then - obviously I've got to book it in, ride it down, if it fails - can I ride it home, get it fixed, ride it back again? My MOT centre is 14 miles away, not a trip I'd like to walk!

Yes, you can ride it home, repair it then ride it back to another prebooked MOT, alternatively you can ride it somewhere to get it repaired if you can't do it yourself.

Riding it around for non repair/MOT trips on the old MOT with the recent MOT saying it failed is a bit of a grey area as you are knowlingly using an unroadworthy vehicle but it does have a current MOT certificate.

If my vehicles failed an MOT I would sort anything dangerous and continue to use them until the retest/expiry of the current MOT, not sure this is strictly legal but I have more important things to worry about.
