As I mentioned, I have the Mod 2 tomorrow morning.

I have a helmet-mounted camera that I use quite often and I was thinking of filming the whole test.

Obviously I would ask the examiner first and check that he's ok with it. If he shows any hesitation whatsoever then I'll forget about it as the most important thing is not to piss him off but provided he is ok with it, what do you guys think?

I actually intended to do the same thing on my Mod 1 test on Sunday but completely forgot to ask the examiner about it so that opportunity is gone, but I would quite like to have the Mod 2 on video if possible.

Just mentioning it here in case there's some glaringly obvious reason why I shouldn't do it that I might have missed, really.

Well, I like having it on the helmet as it proves when I did lifesavers Smile

I wouldn't mention it to the examiner personally, so wouldn't use an obvious camera either.
I'd worry they would think you are trying to catch them out - so may well get them in a bad mood with you, leading to them being extra harsh where they could be lenient.

The camera's not discreet so if I do film it will be obvious and only polite to ask permission.

I mean technically on a public road I can film whatever I like, but that's definitely not the sort of approach I want to take.

And thus I'd recommend not doing it; for the risk that asking the question will garner a negative reaction.

You can almost guarantee that he will not agree to you using the camera, there are no positives for the examiner. In his position I would be concerned that you may attempt to use it as some form of evidence. This would lead me to be overly cautious in my assessment of your riding and therefore turn a 'just about' pass into a fail.

The comment 'as it proves when I did lifesavers' suggests that you are already planning to use it in some form of disagreement, not a good frame of mind to go into the test with.

Not really sure why'd you take it anyway?

You're only going to annoy them.

I wouldn't bother. There are times and places for cameras and this isn't one of them. It'll only be negative for you, nothing positive can come of it so i'd forget it and move on.

All you'll do is increase your chances of failing by pissing the examiner off. Saying 'well its legal and I can do it anyway' is stupid because as the examiner he can say 'well you've pissed me off so i'll find something to fail you'.

Your on the loosing side. I hear a lot of people that say 'something stupid happened' or 'failed because of something i didnt do' is down to someone not actually spotting something. Sure, the examiner might have a bad day, everyone does, but in most cases a decent ride will lead to a decent outcome, end of.

Do your ride the best you can, get your pass then slap the camera on your lid and go compete with google streetview Laughing

To be fair, it's something i'd have liked to do, i'm technical and like messing about with stuff. But if it doesn't take much to give an examiner the arse why bother? leave it, dont give it the chance to annoy him and look forward to filming more 'fun' riding once you've passed Wink

It's a damn site more than that when you have to rent a bike and a person to escort you down there on said bike.

I just saw this YouTube video of a bloke who'd filmed his Mod 1 pass and thought I'd quite like to do the same, for both parts (but alas I forgot to ask on Sunday).

Will take the camera along in a pocket and judge it when I meet the examiner, I think.

I'd say ask personally.. And it's something I wouldve liked to have done just to have a record of how I rode.. Passed though so wasn't neccesary..

Brother however has just failed his mod2 for 35 in a 30 and he's looked back over the route and doesn't think that was fair..but a video of his ride would show it..

On the other hand as people have said it might piss the examiner off..

So your call Laughing

To be fair, I think it would actually be quite interesting for other people doing their tests (prior to starting training) to see.

But no way I'd risk even asking personally.

Many examiners, like many police, have a rather elevated view of both their place in society and the value of their knowledge.
This means they often really don't appreciate people trying to challenge it.

How would you like it if some random asked to film you at work? Don't piss the examiner off before you've even started.

You would be removing any chance of the examiner being able to allow you the 'odd dodgy manoeuvre' go by, because we all know it would end up on YouTube with possible consequences for him/her.

Well I work for a broadcaster (I'm a video editor) and a lot of TV programmes are filmed in my building, plus they're always doing internal promotional videos, so cameras are a daily sight around here and I've been in a couple of the videos.

So it's perhaps not a fair situation from which to be asked that question but I'll answer it anyway, and my answer is "I'd quite like it" Smile

But aside from my working environment I started filming my commutes because I genuinely believe that filming things is the way forward and I'm not hypocritical when it comes to this topic - I believe more people should do it.

In fact, I hadn't really thought about this until you asked that question but now that I contemplate it, I actually think I would like the DSA to begin filming tests tbh. They should make the examiners film them and keep a record for X amount of time (with X being the length of time you're allowed to appeal for, I guess). I think that would be a great idea.

Would you if it was all the time, however?
If it meant every single thing you did was recorded?
Even then, I suspect you're not in a job where the public are looking to criticise in a lot of the cases when you're doing your job right, making generally trouble/hassle for you.

Same with the road - you may think it's the way forward now, but when you get in to faster riding more later and find that the granny doing 45mph on the national speed limit who you passed can show you exceeded 60mph in your overtake and gets you done because she thought it was 'dangerous', you might decide big brother isn't so great!

If someone has a video of me doing something wrong and I get done because of it then fair play. I shan't be crying about it.

If I worked, say, for the council, dealing with members of the public every day and there was CCTV pointing at me all day* then I'd be fine with that.

Because I'm 100% happy to take responsibility for myself. In fact I actually don't want anybody else trying to take responsibility for me, I relish having it.

*My local council already do this, I think... Pretty sure that when I've been in there to buy residents parking permits they have CCTV in there.

Fecking film it then. It's a great idea. Is that answer better?

Film it and let him know you are, then let us know what he fails you on how your test goes.
