When you pass the Mod 2 I assume you send both parts of your license to the DVLA (and no doubt pay some sort of fee, I expect) and then they send it back to you with the new entitlement printed on it.

Is this right?

I ask because I have my Mod 2 tomorrow morning and assuming I pass I was planning to test ride a couple of bikes this weekend.

But if I've sent my license to the DVLA then I won't be able to take it to the dealership prior to the test drive.

Is there anything you get to keep in the meantime to enable you to prove you passed the test and hold a full license or do you simply have to wait until the DVLA send it back before you can start going on test rides?

I don't know about other people, but my examiner took both parts of my licence off me, and he sent them off to the DVLA for me.

You get to keep your pass certificate, so atleast you can prove you passed your test Smile Thumbs Up

Some dealerships are a bit 'jumpy' most will want the paper part as well as the card.

The Suzuki dealership near me requires that you've had your licence for 2 years?!

Watch out what your signing - On Yer Bike has a £2k excess that you're liable for in the event of an incident.

Harley dealerships can be even more vague.....

You give your licence to the test centre, they send it off and give you a pass certificate.

Takes between a week and 2 weeks for it to return to your hands.

I already asked the guy at the dealership if he's ok with allowing brand new riders out.

He said that while he wouldn't let me go out on a supersport he was fine with me going out on a Versys (what I'm thinking of buying) so I'm hoping the same will be true of the CBF they had outside the other day as well.

erm you don't pay a fee when the exminer takes it from you, I think there is an option to send it yourself, but you'll hang on to your provisional license..
So unless the dealer will accept your provisional and pass cert for a test ride you'd be in the same position?

Worth a shot I suppose.. Aslong as you remember to send it off yourself!
Good luck Thumbs Up

I suggest that you let the examiner send everything away and don't bother holding on to your provisional.

It seems a bit silly to hold on to your provisional and then have to send it away just because you can't wait a few days to test ride a versys.

I have known a couple of people that held on to their pass certificate and forgot to send it away in the 2 years and have had to resit their test.

Just get it away it's less hassle. You can test ride a bike any day you want after you get it back.

Yes, that's what I'll probably do.

Just to be clear, I wasn't of the opinion that a test ride this weekend was so important to me that it was worth delaying the license send-off.

As you say, I can take a test ride any time I like once I get it back.

I just wasn't sure what the procedure was and whether the pass certificate was enough for a dealer in the meantime.

If not, it's no bother, just thought I'd ask on here and educate myself.

My examiner took my license and told me that the little box he'd filled in would "tell our computer to tell the DVLA's computer to send out your new licence" and that my old license was shredded on the premises after I left.

I've still got the pass certificate, with my license number on though. I might frame it Very Happy

Ask the dealer......

Would seem to the the best option, as they, not us are the one's who are going to let you take the test ride.
Diffrent dealers will have diffrent take's on who they will allow a test rise too.

As to the Versys.. Good choice Thumbs Up

In my experience most dealerships won't let you test ride if you have held your license less than a year.

Yet to find one near me (bristol) that will.

I handed mine over for shredding (they don't send it off, they just tell the DVLA that they've destroyed it), but only because I already had a spare. That's policy, not accident, I always keep at least 2 on the go.

In your situation, I'd probably hang on to it until you've done your test riding, if the dealer needs to see it. Heck, make some copies, it's what they'll do anyway.
