Yup, did my mod 1 today. Never been on a >500, never mind a 650 before. Just rocked up, spent 2 hours getting accustomed to the machine. Pimped over to the test center, and passed.

To the bike school that said I needed 6 hours of training before even booking the test... Middle Finger

Oh, then I bought an XT600. Feels good.

Grats gents.

Still haven't had the time to practice slow U-turns, figure 8's and so on. I've just been road riding and enjoying the weather and so on Very Happy

Need to get this outta the way so any tips for me??? Thumbs Up

I mean it, slow stuff is proving a hard task as I have a heavy 125 and with work I get VERY lil time to practice. I am planning on getting to a few local car parks this weekend, I'm even getting up at 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Now, that is dedication Laughing Thumbs Up

So here I am at the final hurdle...MOD2. I intend to do MOD2 on a larger bike. The EARLIEST I can get a MOD2 test through a local training school is the 24th of November. Yeah about 2 months away! So I looked on the DVLA website and it seems they have LOADS of tests. available all the time!

I already have a >600cc bike (xt600) that is taxed, MOT'd but SORN'd (as there is no one insured to it).

Assuming I...uh...drive it to the test centre in my van can I take my test on it without an instructor being present? Also, will they record the registration number, i.e. can I get away with riding this thing for the test while SORN'd?

I assume I won't need insurance as the testers insurance will have me covered? (otherwise how else would I be able to ride a DAS bike without an instructor being on the route?)

In a word.. No..

Your bke will need to be road worthy so... tax, MOT and Insured for you to ride. Having it SORN'd means you are not riding it on the road, it will need to be un-SORN'd and you will have to buy the insurance to cover you to ride it... even for the test. I don't think the test centres have any insurance cover for you as people use instructors bikes which would be 'block' insured for any rider as long as they are supervised (Assuming though...)

If you can insure it and get it to the test centre then go for it! Very Happy

I had to wait 1 week between my Mod 1 and Mod 2 and it was nasty!!... couldn't imagine having to wait 2 months!

Good luck though whichever way you choose...

P.S. If you take it on your own bike, be prepared to prove you are insured, taxed and MOT'd and the bike is fit for riding on a public highway!

how can it be taxed AND sorn??

its either taxed or it isnt (in which case it must be sorn)

or do you simply mean its not insured?

in that case get it insured (make sure its taxed/moted) and a friend with a licence to ride it down to the test centre.

then you'll be able to use it.

How can it be taxed and SORNed at the same time. A SORN stops you needing to buy tax as you're telling the DVLA you aren't using it on the road.

Doesn't have anything to do with insurance..

Oh but it does. If a vehicle is not insured, it MUST be sorned and taken off the road DESPITE being taxed.

What, meaningless legislation for the sole purpose of extracting money from motorists? Never.

The bike has tax and is MOTd. It is not insured and thus SORNd. So if I somehow manage to insure myself for this vehicle I am not licensed for, de-SORN it AND find a method to fly it to the test centre THEN I can sit my test?

Yes, if you can get it insured and get it to the test centre then there shouldn't be a problem taking your test on it. Insurance will probably be expensive though but the examiner will fullfill the requirement of being in touch with an instructor via radio and, of course, he will be supervising you.

Urgh. Declaring SORN cancels any current VED on the vehicle. It's not "taxed" as far as the DVLA is concerned, even if you chosen to keep possession of the VED disc rather than surrender it for a partial refund. Computer Will Say No.

If you're thinking of putting the cancelled disc on the bike, fair enough, it might fool a very casual observer. On the other hand, it's not a valid disc, and worse case you're looking at Perverting the Course of Justice, which is a big boy crime.

Yes, you can. You are licensed to ride it on your provisional under specific conditions, one of which is showing L plates front and rear and being on test. Strictly speaking, there's no requirement to wear hi-vis while on test (only while under instruction), but best not to try and argue the toss with the examiner on that. Vis-up.

However, you are going to have to persuade an insurer to cover you on that basis. I'd suggest looking at Swinton, since they don't seem to care much about licenses when you take out the policy. See if they give you cover on the bike on your provisional. Even if they cover you through ignorance, all you need is the certificate of insurance in your hand. Just don't tell any porkies, and it's not fraud: you can ride that bike completely legally on a provisional, if you abide by the conditions, exactly the same as you need to do while riding a 125 (just the L plates in that case).

You de-SORN by paying VED. So again, even if you still have a disc, it means nothing to The Computer and you have to buy a new one in order to not get tugged by the fuzz or nabbed by ANPR.

Now I might be completely wrong as it's a while since I did my test - the XT isn't over 46.6bhp needed for the DAS test and obviously over the 125cc for the other test and then just over the 33bhp restricted limit.

Are you doing DAS but taking the test on another bike?

Again, I'm not up on the latest rules so might be completely irrelevant.

Heh, nice spot. Yes, it claims 45bhp, just under the minimum required.

But then so does the GS500, and that's apparently a fairly common test bike, so you might get lucky.

[UPDATE]
Heh, look what the directgov side shows as an example of "A category A unrestricted motorcycle is a solo motorcycle with a power output of at least 35 kilowatts (46.6 brake horse power)."

It's hard because spackers keep stacking their shiny new chariots. It's only getting harder from here though, so you're going to have to suck it up and get it done.
