Seeing as this is a lamentation of stupidity that resulted in injury, I stuck it in General. But it would work well as a 'what NOT to do. EVER' in New Riders


The Story.

So, yesterday was my first day of training for my DAS with my Mod 1 set for Friday. I've been looking forward to this for MONTHS. It probably would have been the highlight of my year! So, I get down to Morse's bright and early yesterday morning all eager beaver and ready to go! A cup of tea later and I'm raring to go on the Suzuki GS500 the instructor's (Clive) has wheeled out.

There was another lovely lady doing her DAS too. Hopefully not too traumatised now!

So we spend a while pootling round the carpark until Clive says 'do we feel confident enough to do a short on-road ride?' - basically for those wondering, they had a couple of CBT's using their training area so we were set to use it in the afternoon whilst they were out doing their road test/driving.

Since we were both pretty happy (the GS was obviously heavier and felt a bit odd compared to my YBR but I was really feeling comfy on it) off we went through Weston and Worle. And was all going fine! I wasn't perfect by any means but was fast getting used to the GS. Fantastic.

Now for those of you who know Weston, you'll know what a shitty junction this is. It just so happens that we were turning right here. Now I've done this lights hundreds of times. I KNOW it's dodgy so I'm always SO careful here.

And yet I managed to plow straight into an oncoming taxi.

All I can think is that I was so focused on getting the bike safely round the corner that I momentarily tunnel-visioned and just completely missed the taxi. The stupidity and carelessness of that alone just infuriates me

So. Now for the gory part (the bit you've all been waiting for!)

Although the taxi hit the bike, the impact went straight up my left arm and basically blew out my wrist resulting in a very nasty fracture.

They manipulated it (thank God for gas) but it didn't stay, or they couldn't get it far enough in place (see pic below).

Now I'm home in a backslab but have to go back in this afternoon. Apparently they're not convinced I won't need surgery on it to get it back into place properly.

So, no test for me and no riding for some time either

And I feel really, really stupid.

I know the road well, I did my test in Weston, so rode around the town a lot.
Hopefully you'll heal quickly, maybe DAS again next year?

I hate junctions that allow oncoming traffic at turns. There is a horrible junction leaving Nailsea towards Clevedon, similar thing.

You might have crashed the same GS I did my test on .

(A lanky guy was using the normal GS so I had to use the one with the lowered seat - it didn't really fit).

Gonna answer all q's in one go as typing one handed:

1. Hit taxi head on (well sorta bounced off the side)

2. As far as I know the clutch lever was broken, a mirror too and the forks were bent

3. Yes it was the GS with the lowered seat

4. DAS next year as soon as I'm well enough

5. Batman t-shirts are awesome

6. Can't wait to be back!

You'll be surprised how quickly these things fix, I came off on the M4 at 70mph in August, and it was only 2 weeks before I was back on a bike, although I didn't break any bones.

When I was 17, 11 long years ago, I drove a 125 into the side of a car and badly broke my right arm. That one took me ~6 weeks, but I still got back on one!!

Before you know it you'll be riding round again

Also, its your left arm, so just get them to put a cast on it and do DAS on a DN-01, no clutch needed!!!

Ouch and double ouch! That's a nasty fracture you've got there.

Having badly sprained my thumb last Nov - almost a fracture but not quite I can empathise with the whole being off the bike for the duration. Just make sure they set it right and do what the docs and physio tell you and don't rush the healing otherwise you'll have problems later on down the line - my thumb still causes me problems now and again nearly a year on. Apparently fractures are better than sprains so you should heal in no time and be all ready for your DAS in spring/summer

On the bright side...it could have been a whole lot worse so thankfully you are still in one and a bit pieces and let's hope that this will be the only riding accident you ever have.

look at it this way, you have had your first crash and now you realise how much it hurts, so you have learned to avoid it at all costs.

Unfortunately some people don't get the oppertunity to learn this lesson.

Sorry to hear of your accident - I know the junction very well - Blackcat Bikes is just after the right turn on the bridge. Hope it doesn't knock your confidence too much.

That looks painful! Hopefully you can get back on a bike as soon as without too much of a delay. Oh, and fingers crossed they can set it without resorting to surgery!

Well I am currently in an elbow to shoulder cast and have been told I have a Smith's fracture. Had to be re-manipulated today (joy) but they're happy with the new position.

Back on Tuesday however as surgery's not off the table yet.

Had a bit of a gravity fail at work on Monday and ended up with a dislocated kneecap and possible ligament damage, but they'll have to wait until the swelling goes down to find out for sure. No riding for me for a while, that splint is rigid. What's worse is that I had to ride 20 miles home afterwards. I don't think I've ever ridden so carefully since I passed my test! I don't think I touched the rear brake all the way. And when I got home, I couldn't get off the bike, I was locked solid into position. Not nice. It throbs.
