Idiot 1 on a ER6-F approaching a roundabout on a through-and-right lane, slowing, with right indicator on.
Idiot 2 on a GPz 305 approaching in a left turn lane, left indicator on.
Idiot 1 nods politely to Idiot 2. Idiot 2 waves cheerily and proceeds on to roundabout as Idiot 1 rides straight through onto single exit lane. Swervy brakey sweary dodgy stuff happens. Idiot 1 proceeds up the tailpipe of Idiot 2, doubtless thinking "Muppet mental!" while Idiot 2 thinks "What have you got, a fishing license?", before Idiot 1 (presumably) finally realises that his right indicator is still merrily flashing, and turns off at the next roundabout.

Hopefully, Idiot 1 remembers to cancel his indicators in future. Idiot 2 definitely vows to follow the Highway Code advice to "be aware [that other roundabout users] may not be signalling correctly or at all", and not to trust a fellow biker in a situation where he wouldn't (and doesn't, at that roundabout) have trusted a cage.
Well, lesson learned, that Idiot 2's first memorable judgement fail and close call in 2 1/2 years of daily motorbicycling. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I often wonder if we should have indicators at all on roundabouts. If you use them, nobody pays a blind bit of notice and you can't trust what someone elses indicators appear to be telling you.
Be safer all round if nobody indicated at all. I personally use hand signals on roundabouts. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Mmm, I normally don't, especially on this roundabout. Idiot 1's approach path used to be 3 lanes (left, through, right) but some genius road planner reduced it to 2 a few months back for no good reason that I can see.
Of course, you can't trust the lane either - this is the same roundabout where I would have been taken clean out by a Plodmobile hoofing it straight through while indicating left from a left lane, except that I anticipated his antics (which merely confirmed my opinion of typical Plod drivers).
So, yes, I usually go by watching the wheels and acceleration, at least on on cars. Assume that they're going to mash you up until you can see otherwise. I would have sworn by his approach that Idiot 1 was going to hook right though, so I guess I can't really judge other bikes. (Thus, Idiot 2).

Well, I did wave - partly in acknowledgement of Idiot 1's courtesy in signalling right so that Idiot 2 could proceed "safely".
I do give left hand signals when it seems appropriate. Right is a bit trickier what with engine braking, but it's something that I might work on. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I think this is a case in point to all the people who have ever complained that being failed for leaving their indicators on is unfair/sily.
It might FEEL a trivial thing to fail on, but this is a clearcut example of the miscommunication and potential risk it causes.
Hope a strong cuppa did the trick after Rogerborg.

The only thing that was covered when i did it, was Mirrors, life saver, Indicate position. When you wanted to turn left or right...
We played the 'mars bar game' with who left them on... I only did once, but one bloke literally did it about 27 times over the 2 hours. Still passed.
Still on roundabouts non of the lanes, or where to indicate was explained, In fact i got extra kudo's for knowing when to indicate followed with 'You can tell you can drive - you know the road' as if it wasn't even expected Dunno if that's the same for all schools tho? ____________________ 2007 YBR 125 (sold), 2011 ER6-N (sold), LHD 1999 GSX750F (sold), ??? ??? |

Indeed, that would have been a test fail - for both of us.

It wasn't a big deal, it's not like he hadn't seen me. It was more embarrassing for both of us. I just thought it was funny that my nearest miss so far has been with another bike, when both of us should have known better. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
