It's legit and an adertising gimmick.

If you'd run your quotes through compare the MEERKAT .com rather than through compare the MARKET .com, you'd have got a "free" meerkat toy but the price of the toy would have bee added to the price of the quotes.

They advertise using animated meerkats and go on about how if you want to find a meerkat, you go on compare the meerkat but for cheap insurance you should go onto compare the market.

Identical sites, give identical quotes but compare the meerkat charges you (£7 I think?) on top for a cuddly toy.

Mrs stinkwheel went on compare the meerkat deliberately for her car insurance because she wanted the cuddly toy, so their gimick worked on at least one person.

Can't beat brilliant advertising mate, currently getting on with a design course and it's really opened my eyes to a lot of stuff.

Not any more they don't. I got a bit carried away when I saw the prices they were going for on eBay when they came out (average of over £100, up to £200) so I took out 4 of the cheapest policies I could find, which happened to be for for imaginary cats at £45 per policy per year, based on the idea that I could just cancel the policy and only have to pay half the premium and then make a couple of quid by selling the things on.

This was back in July and so far only one of the four toys has arrived and now prices are only about £30 or so per toy. I'm going to risk hanging on to them until Christmas to see if the prices rise a little again, but I certainly won't be buying a yacht with my earnings.
