In a 'Heated gloves' thread i read this.

Remember to order a new reg/rec as well, heated things are a killer!

How come? I was under the impression that reg/recs work harder when they have no load. i.e no lights and no satnav or other powered devices.

Yup, weaker bikes like Balckbirds, Fireblades, 1200 Bandits.... I can go on.
The latest breed of R/R's seem much more robust than the things fitted as O/E until quite recently.
The really iffy ones as fitted to most Honda's, Kawasaki's, earlish Yamaha's, in fact most bikes could handle the load of the bike, lights, indicators, ignition with a BIT of margin for battery maintenance but are very near their limits. Usually placed under a seat cover with little direct cooling air they get HOT. Give that a few years and the electrical/electronics connections start to get stress failures. Any extra loading on these marginally specified components will lead to failure.
