I've just put my 94 NSR back on the road after 6 years stored in my garage, the only thing I had to do was change the petrol, clean the carb, change the battery and it started up straight away.
After the intitial ride I had a few issues such as being down on power etc. I did a full top end rebuild on it, replaced the thermostat and corrected the powervalve cables that the previous numpty had put on back to front at the servo end. After running in the bike now flies and it's just so light that you can throw it around. I run it on Motul 710 and haven't used a tankfull yet so it isn't too bad on the 2 stroke.
2 strokes are only unreliable if they are abused, which unfortunatly they are quite often. I would sacrifice a tiny bit of speed and get an NSR over a RS as they are more reliable and easier to get parts for. Whatever one you buy you may as well budget for a top end rebuild as most owners bu**sh*t about this so it prbably never happened. Also they should be run on high quality 2 stroke oil not your local Tesco value stuff.
2 smokes rock and you'll be keeping alive the dream for future generations!

thanks for the replys everyone,
im liking the pic of the nsr ive seen an rg 125 on ebay and ive always liked the rg 125 fun
though im keen to stay with honda and have got my eye on a nsr alcast model, cant really afford 1000 plus for a newer nsr .....
ive heard that mixing the 2 stroke oil (going from one brand to another,) can cause sludge that blocks the 2 stroke oil pipe further causing the engine to sieze, anyone had a problem with this? i think i would be better off using pre mix?
anyone owned the older nsr alcast? any issues?
the rs is a great looking bike i hear they are going to a 4 stroke soon called the rs4 had a quick look on google,
thats going to cost some dough!
feel like ive missed out never owning a 2 stroke everyone says they are great! while they work... always stayed away as i often commute fron norfolk to lincolnshire, my old cg had hard times keeping 55mph but it didnt let me down, put 11,000 miles on it and sold it for little more than was payed for it would be nice to have something that can stick at 60 and if wanted i can hit the throttle and get a noticeable reaction! if i get the nsr will post a pic! |

if you want a 2 stroke, you want a gilera sc, in my opinion, yamaha dt engine, one of the most reliable 2 strokes, very fast, sexy looking 125. just the parts arn't cheap and the fairings are expensive if you come to replace them ____________________ cclarke |

ive had a derbi senda 50, and that was a quality 2stroke, had a few problms now and again, but it was a sweet bike, then had a suzuki gx 125, was faster than the send 50, and amazing on ful as its a 4 stoke, reliabilty was superior aswell, always started no matter how cold it was but then i got an rs 125, and i havent rode anything like it in my life, keep up the maintenance and your good ill never get anything other than a 2 stroke ____________________ live life to the max.... Yep,
NSR owner here, they are fantastic, dont think i could go back to a 4 stroke (although i just need to get A2 out the way then i may consider a 600 4-T :p).
They really arn't that much more hassle than a 4 stroke (if you look after your 4 stroke well). I met a chap accross my road from my parents house, I've seen his NSR and it looks practically mint! Says he's had it from new and never had rings/piston etc done. Just fuel/oil in and away he goes. He's done 25k on it and it doesnt hang around!
Reliability isnt the mythical issue its made out to be!
Just a thought, hypothetically a de-restricted NSR can sit at 90mph if you have headphones loud enough to drown out the 10,000+ rpm of the engine :p. 70-75 would be plenty comfortable though

NSR125 here also. Had it since the end of January. Done 35,000 miles total since it's been on the road. Since I've had it, I've not had to do much on it mechanically. It has broken down once, but this was due to a faulty spark plug I put in, and was resolved quickly. I do have a problem with neutral, but this was my own doing, and I've not been able to get into the crank casing to fix it.
They're great bikes, but will give you a numb ass if you ride it for long periods of time. Mine's restricted and will do an indicated 80, so it's working on the motorway - even if it does vibrate a lot! I've still got to replace a few internal parts, but I'm reluctant to do anything while it's still running.
The guy I bought it off did 17,000 miles on it. I've clocked up another 5,000+ since Feb, and it's still running strong. As much as I love this bike, I'll be selling it come Feb so I can get something bigger. One other problem is that scum keep trying to knick it! ____________________ Ted : "Maybe he's agoraphobic."
