Hi,

Not quite a bike, but a single cylinder mower engine, hope ya'll dont mind.
The mower engine has a pull starter, which is crap. It either doesnt spin the engine for enough rotations to fire it up, then every 3rd pull the spring unravels and you need 8 tiny Japanese hands to refit it all.

Ive totally removed the pull starter and spin it up with a cordless drill on the crank nut. Works lovely. Problem: Crank nut is a lefty, so if im a bit heavy with the drill, it undoes the nut rather that cranking the engine! The flywheel is on a woodruff key (?) so it isnt a problem, just bloody annoying!
Any suggestions? I thought id put a second nut on the thread and nip the 2 together. 10minutes of fiddling later i realise a normal nut wont go on a lefty thread! Embarassed

Threadlock? Or buy another nut and double nut it.

Could always put a small weld blob on it.

The old ant-theft trick is to bruise the thread above the nut, but that would mean not being able to easily remove it if needed. Better, as stated above, get a thin tab washer and turn one side up hard againt one of the nut's flats.

Hi

I presume the nut is above some kind of flywheel. I would be tempted to put a small hole in the flywheel either side of the nut, and then use a cut down larger socket with a couple of pins on it to line up with the holes.

All the best

Keith

I'd drill and tap a thread through the side of the nut and use a grub screw to secure the nut to the shaft. This method will allow you to easily remove the nut at some later stage should you need to do so.
