I went to look at a Kawasaki Versys yesterday and I'm planning to buy it next weekend (the chap's holding onto it for me).

Everything seems above board and genuine so far but this evening I've just gone to get some insurance quotes using the number plate from it and in all the online insurance quote pages the bike is listed as a Kawasaki KLE650 instead of a Versys.

Same appears to be true on HPI check - I didn't pay for the full check just whacked the reg into the box to see what came up.

However on the MID it is listed as a Versys.

Should this ring any alarm bells at all or is it just one of those things?

Erm the KLE650 is the Versis, the Versis is the KLE650 IIRC.

Much like Honda Fireblade is also the CBR1000RR. The CBR1000RR is also the Fireblade.

Sorry, my mistake, I meant that it's showing as "KAWASAKI KLR 650 (KL650C)", not KLE.

Apologies.

So yeah, is this something to be wary of?

My car showed up as the wrong model for a while.

Basically it was written off and in between me having the VIC done (a car thing to make sure I haven't stolen a car and transferred the numbers) and me getting my V5 through it was down as the wrong model on the V5 (DVLA are useless), was like this for a while until by chance the mechanic doing my MOT copied my VIN down wrong by a digit and I had to send some stuff off to confirm my VIN and model etc and it was corrected.

I'd be looking to see if the bike was a ringer or a write off. Is probably neither but it is certainly something to look out for, check the VIN and engine numbers against the V5, do a HPI check etc.

Cheers.

Whereabouts are VIN and engine numbers normally located? I've never had to check them before so I'm not sure what to look for, any help appreciated.

VIN on the headstock, i.e. the bit of the frame where the forks attach. Engine number will be on the engine somewhere, normally on the crankcase at the back.

Thanks again... What does a crankcase look like? Smile

Also, where is it on the bike?

And do I cross-reference both of those numbers with the V5 doc?

(Sorry for all the questions)

Lol.

In this photo, red line surrounds the crankcase (i.e. the case of your gearbox etc) and the yellow circle surrounds the engine number. I think this is a KLR engine.

Yes V5 should have bnoth numbers on it, if it doesn't have an engine number don't panic, some bikes don't. I am sure the current owner wouldn't mind helping you find the engine number.

Thank you, much appreciated.

Just did a HPI check and it came back clear so that's good. Also tyhe HPI has it listed as a KLE rather than a KLR so hopefully it's just a bug in the insurance companies' databases.

In which case so long as the V5 matches the details on the bike you should be ok. The insurance thing relies on second hand info, wouldn't think too much into it.

Is the bike at a dealership or a private sale?
