I chopped up some chilies last night and washed my hands straight after, I then rubbed my eye which caused considerable discomfort.

Since then I have washed my hands about 10 times and had a shower yet whenever I lick my fingers my lips and tounge start to tingle.

Anyway how do I get rid of the taste?

Chilli is soluble in animal fats and oils. Its why milk or ice cream washes away the burning sensation when you eat something wayy too hot in a (feelble) effort to impress your latest squeeze.

Rinse your hand in milk or something else with some fat or oil in it. Then rewash your hands..... with SOAP you are using soap right as soap contains fats as well...

Me dad 'washes his hands' when he says that he uses just water. When I go round his house I tend to try not to touch anything.

If you have been handling chillis - err, be careful when in close contact with the Mrs or partner. I remember an incident . . . . . but the less said about that the better

Did you know your hands will have a higher bacterial load half an hour after washing them with soap than if you hadn't bothered?

Just thought that might interest you.

When preparing VERY hot chillis I now wear gloves. Rubbing your eyes or taking a piss is rather painful if you don't.

While training to be a chef, in one of the hotels I worked in, the second chef was cutting chilli's, failed to wash his hands and went for a pee...... He had to be sent home, such was his discomfort.

I never wear gloves and eat Naga strength Trinidad Scorpions every day. The hot eye and nob of fire is just part of the fun IMHO.

When I prepare Dorset Nagas I always wear gloves, just latex gloves that I use when I work on the bike/car, they do the job then I take them off very carefully and bin them.

If you want to get it off your hands, I'd recommend washing them with a combination soap and milk. I found out if I warmed up the milk in the microwave for a minute or two, wash my hands with that and then wash with soap it does the job, but it's better to just wear a pair of latex gloves!

Also, I make soup with The Source 7.1 Million Scoville Units chilli extract, mainly tomato soup and that is, other than fantastic tasting, something I ONLY eat wearing gloves and with a teatowel over me, I'd hate to spill that on me, I have got some on my finger at one point and it was like setting my finger on fire.

I am a HUGE fan of the heat, and once you start getting into the 500,000 Scoville Unit range, gloves are absolutely ESSENTIAL for preparation.

I've yet to use my 15 Million extract, I can't think of anything to dilute it in enough! Laughing!

I think you just get used to the heat, occasionally I do rub my eye or cheek after a shave and have a bit of a hard time but it is rare. As for nob of fire I can not remember my last time and I do handle it on a regular basis.
As for extract, I just do not like the taste.

Skin's a pretty inhospitable environment between the bodies own defences, e.g. low pH, and the competitive nature of the usual (commensal) bacteria that lives on it. Washing effectively resets the gameboard, stripping away the acids and protective bacteria and making the environment much more accessible for any other stuff that fancies a crack at living there. So you get bacterial proliferation until your skin sorts itself out, and your commensal flora re-establishes itself.

And chilli fingers in sensitive places = bad news Wink

Totally untrue. Around 30 mins after washing with soap/ water the bacterial coverage on your hands will be more or less back to the same level as before BUT typically the bacteria will be Gram Positive types which are relatively harmless. What SHOULD not be present are the Gram negative types that can be pathogenic (enteritic usually) and which you acquire by scratching your arse.

Exactly how long it takes for the skin bacteria left after washing and acquired by contacts to general surfaces to get back to the before wash level will depend on what you do with your hands - what you touch - but 30 to 45 mins is reasonable

Implying staphs and streps aren't responsible for the majority of hospital aquired bacterial infections.

It was trinidad scorpions that prompted me to start wearing gloves Thumbs Up .


As for worst eye pain ever, last night my GF put some olbas oil on my pillow as I have a cold (without my compliance I might add), I woke up in the middle of the night with it in my eyeball. It's like feeding extra strong mints to your retinas, was horrible, worse than chilli by a long shot.

Don't be a smarty pants and put a tiny tiny tiny amount into your nandos marinade and proceed to cover big chicken fillets in it.

Was very hot to say the least, no swear words could match the pain.

Imagine stubbing your toe on a door frame, then using sandpaper to rub away your skin, then repeat that over and over... Laughing Agony central.

There are some good literature references under the "Other Resources" tab on that website

I have for many years been "involved" in the status of bacteria on the NORMAL skin of NORMAL people (surgeons in hospitals are a very different case). It is really only for surgeons etc washing very many times every day or even hour that the skin-oil removal can have a contribution to bacterial regrowth. For normal skin it is not an issue.

The fact remains that washing hands with soap/ water will remove the vast majority of resident bacteria (80-90%, some say more). The residue hidden in skin folds and pores will multiply quickly BUT the return to the normal population level in 30 to 40-ish minutes is almost ALL because the washed skin will touch surrounding surfaces / other people that still carry a high load of bacteria. Hopefully those surfaces and people will not transmit faecal batceria - notably E.Coli but others are involved. Gram Negatives like E.Coli find it difficult to survive on normal, dry-ish, skin eg hands and thrive only on the warmer and moister parts of the body, so remove them with soap & water and beware what you touch.

Globally, 4 children under 5 die of diarrhoea every minute. 2.2 million each year. The major cause is E.Coli. Proper handwashing could reduce that by 1 million

Pussy. As a schoolboy, I used to liven up boring maths lessons by rubbing it onto my rectum and testicles.

When making the Korean staple Kimchi, it is always advised to wear thick rubber gloves. Not so much from a point of hygiene, but because spending a day rubbing chilli paste into cabbages tends to get it entirely ingrained into your hands, and makes eye rubbing or knob handling an impossibility. (Although it is traditionally made by women, so at least they usually miss out on the knob handling section. Well, at least their own knobs anyway.)
