And i need to invest in suitable clothing. My jacket has a removeable thermal liner so ive put that back in, my jeans keep the wind out well anyway, tends to be my feet that get cold but some decent socks will sort that.

I was thinking of getting one of these but they seem a bit ott:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Thermal-1-Hole-Lightweight-Balaclava-Motorbike-Mask-Ski-Winter-Hat-Mens-/130579846063?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Helmets&hash=item1e672a53af

Because my face and hands are the areas that suffer most. I am tempted to get some bar muffs as well, but unsure on which to get or if its important to get a good brand, or generic Ebay £8 ones?

I have one of those masks. They are great at keeping you warm. I also use Oxford Hot Hands overgrips which keep my hands nice and toasty warm. The main thing to remember is plenty of layers. In the very coldest weather I wear a t-shirt, a microfibre top and a fleece top under my jacket. Then I have a neckwarmer and my balaclava mask. On my legs I'll wear long johns under my jeans and then my army surplus goretex waterproofs over the top of those. If needed I'll wear two pairs of socks. One thin pair and one pair of thick thermal socks as well. On my hands I'll wear some thin woolen gloves (if needed) and then my normal gloves over the top.

It really doesn't matter if you think its OTT or not... Its your face, only you know what you need to keep it warm.

I use a woolen snood/tube year round, 'cos it helps keep my neck warm, and I'm a pussy.

Jeans will prob not be warm enough on their own once winter really bites, I've got textile troos with a thermal liner and on proper cold days I wear long johns too, but again, it up to you.

Don't underestimate how cold it can get on a bike...

Absolutely! Wear all the stuff you need to keep you warm and don't give a crap what it looks like or what people say about you wearing it.

Fastbike mag have a balaclava included this month - at least you get two things for £4-ish.

I have been wearing a buff around my neck and head this week as it has got that bit colder.

I've been searching on here for info about heated grips and it seems people are using all sorts, all with good results. There are some oxford copies on ebay for around £30 I think, which seems good value.

Not looked in to it too much though as I'll be taking the car when its properly cold!! Embarassed

Hi

If you wear glasses then you might find face masks direct your breath up the sides of you nose and steam up your glasses. Had one years ago that worked well to keep me warm, but the lack of vision was a bit of a down side.

If you keep your core temp up then your body should have enough heat spare to keep your extremities pretty warm. As such first step if as many warm layers on your chest as possible.

All the best

Keith

You lose a surprising amount of heat through your legs and jeans aren't great wind proofing, I would (and did) fork out 60-ish quid for a set of lined over trousers, sort of bikers version of what skiers wear.

I got a "free"-ish one with the latest edition of Fast Bikes. I'm not planning on riding in Arctic weather, so this should do just right Smile

What gets cold the most during the winter is the fingers. At least with on my old bird Smile

Well i just rode home in temperature at 7C according to BBC weather.
Bloody cold, with t shirt, hoody and thermal lined jacket, kevlar jeans boots and gloves.

Think i will splash out on some heated gloves as if anything its a bit dangerous having hands so cold they stiffen up.

7C!!! That's veritable t-shirt weather!Laughing
Wait until it's -7C and with the wind chill taking it down to around -15C. Then you'll know what bloody cold is Laughing

Seriously though, I'd invest in some thermal underwear and some HotHands. At around £40 new they are far, far cheaper than heated gloves. You could also invest in some handlebar muffs if the cold really bothers you that much. Ok so they'll look a little silly on a cruiser (well a lot silly probably Laughing ), but at least your hands will be warm.
