In the first frost of last year I spent a bit of time sliding on my arse watching my bike run away from me, the roads were still unsalted and I was rather unprepared for the roundabout ice rink that I was faced with. In an attempt to not break anymore ribs/bikes I had a look around to see how to predict ice on the roads as it is the road temperature that is important, not the air temperature so the weather forecast is largely useless.

I found this and thought of the kind folk of BCF:

Type in your city to get the lowest ground temp/road conditions you might expect Thumbs Up .

What about looking out the window ? Can't you tell by looking outside or even looking as you ride, and just being a little safer if it's very cold?

It's not a replacement for good riding, rather another tool in your arsenal Thumbs Up .

Frost hollows. I'm very wary of bits of my commute which are over hung by trees and in the shade (lots of little valleys round here) as the sun comes up. They retain alot of moisture overnight, and stay frosty long after the rest of the road has thawed and dried out.

My mate works for a private weather forecasting company. Covers most of the UK airports and loads of other services.

He's mentioned that loads of local authorities are cancelling contracts with his company, to try and save a bit of cash. So 'prior warning' for gritters will be getting worse by the looks of it!

I'll probably be doing some 50mile each way commutes later this year, done the journey before, not unknown for home to be bone dry & warm and destination to be under a foot of snow.
