Firstly, does anyone on here do a motorsports degree?

Basically, next year I am going to have to choose what I want to do after sixth form. The plan was to take a mechanical engineering degree and go from there, or join the RAF and get them to sponsor me to do a degree.

Thing is I don't want to move away for several reasons but forget that.

If I do a motorsports degree, i could do it at Bristol (1hr 30mins away) so I could live there and come home every weekend or something.

Thing is, if I don't want to do it after, will other employers give me a job as if it were mechanical engineering? Or is it just too narrow a subject?

The RAF say you need a masters or accredited in an associated engineering or scientific subject. So would motorsports qualify if I decided I didn't want to or couldn't get a job in it.

And if anyone does a degree in it, what does it encompass? Is it mainly computer focused mechanics like F1 shit or do you actually learn and develop systems mechanically? I know a fair bit but would I need to know how both two and four strokes work down to pretty much every component or is that covered in the degree as I have never been taught it and won't be, so what I know is from experience and knowledge.

Cheers guys Thumbs Up

Too narrow a degree. With Mechanical Engineering, you can do anything. It's great. Thumbs Up

As for your degree being accreddited, you'd need to check how they accredit degrees. Probably via some sort of engineering institution like IMECHE or IET.

Yeah, I'd look into accredditation if I was going down that route anyway.

whut teh fhuk is IMECHE or IET??

Thing is, it was always seen as a dream as I grew up with racing. But now it seems quite real. I think it would be one of those jobs where pretty much every day I enjoy my job.

How likely do you reckon I am to get a job in a motorsports team after the degree?

And do you think I could still get into it with just a mechanical engineering degree?

I think you've probably got as much of an opportunity getting into it with a Mech Eng degree as you do the specialized one. If you go into University, the first thing you do in your first year is look for a summer placement with a company you want to look for. As I said, the mechanical engineering degree can pretty much get you into anything but you gotta get in there "at the start". Take that from me, I was nowhere near as bright enthusiastic to learn as 75% of my fellow students yet I got a summer placement, sponsorship and a good bloody head start. Smile

IMECHE = Institure of Mechanical Engineers
IET = Institute of Engineers & Technologists

I only use those two as thats whom I'm a member of...there are loads of institutions, probably more that's suited to motorsports.....chances are, if it's accreddited by the ECUK (engineering council UK) then that's all the RAF will want to see. Google them and you can do a search for what is accreddited and what isn't. My BEng degree wasn't recognised hence why I'm now doing a Dist Learning MSc so that it's accredited.
