Went out for a nice hoon today, nice morning, rode from Hastings > Brighton, met a mate their, headed over to boxhill, nice roads on the way up etc..

Then maybe ~10 miles out from boxhill on one of the dual carriageways i'm doing a reasonable speed (a lot lower than something stupid) and I feel a large tap on my leg, kinda like a big stone has hit it. I look down and see my coolant pipes and other bits that are normally covered by fairing. Then I realised the big bit of fairing covering the right side of my RR had been left behind.

Queue stopping, walking back, collecting fairing - now badly cracked in lots of places. Walk back to the bike, my mate has spare bolts so i play with that while he goes off to get Gaffer tape. A short while later, back in business and only functional damage is the right front indicator which came off at the same time...

I'm confused about how this has happened, i guess a bolt or two has came out, something has came loose and the wind has got under it and ripped it up. As that bit of fairing is also attached to the Belly pan it has also knackered that - massive crack about 1/2 the length of the belly pan.

Anyway, i was looking at doing a winter rebuild/cleanup on this bike as it needs it. With the cost of stock fairings i'm now tempted to turn it into a repsol rep, it'll never bring back what i paid for it anyway and i'm not too bothered, so with this happening i think it's tipped the scales.

Anyway, useless without some pictures, here you got. I now await 'seriously not cool story bro' type pics.

edit: Cheers to the bloke on the Harley and R1 who both stopped to check everything was ok!

Cool story! (really..) Never would have thought about that happening, not going to worry about it but interesting nonetheless.

Must be something in the air today. I was riding along and my speedo dropped to zero. Pulled over and the speedo cable had come clean off from the speedo drive. The little screw was missing, so tucked the cable under the tax disc holder and rode home gauging my speed by how fast I was passing other road users.

This happened to a friend of mine while i was 'following' him in the car, at some speed Shifty . It was dark, the first i knew was a wobble of the taillight right before i nearly slammed into him Sad He was nearly sick with shock at the side of the road Sad It was a small 400 honda sports thing and it was a side panel.

Never seen a fairing rip off, but did see someone's fairing get hit by a big stone. It looked like an impressive explosion of plastic, hat off to him he kept upright at 50mph+ too.

This was a common occurance on the 749 and 999 ducatis from what I remember - certainly a costly occurance! Personally i would look for a used fairing though that looks like one of the slightly less common colour schemes so maybe difficult to find.
good opportunity to go for a different scheme I suppose - and I think your bike has a tank cover rather than painted tank so if you do go for some chinky fairings for example you will probably get the tank cover too so a simple ( Neutral ) bolt on job. Thumbs Up

This happened to my mate on a Honda CBR400 but it was from a drop, i told him to check the mounts and he said they were fine, turns out he went down the motorway the next day and his fairing came off.

The mounting holes must of been a wrong shape or damaged failing that who ever had the fairing off last mustn't of screwed the bolts in propper.

I've had the bike from new and that side was fine before this, it'd has had a slow speed drop on the other side but that was repaired.

The Fairings are original Honda and the radiator condition underneath is largely down to the first year and a half of this bikes life where i commuted on it and lived on the seafront, so it's more weathered than it should be for a bike of its age.

I'd took the bike apart last winter for a cleanup and put it back together around January time, since then though it's had a shop service and the front stantions replaced in the forks, so the last people to take the fairing off would be the shop.

I'd done ~2 hours riding before this had came off, and some riding faster than i was going when it went.

Looking over the damage at the moment my assumption is it's managed to loose a couple of bolts riding, the wind has caught it and it's gone. All in all not great but it is what it is.

Looking bike I feel quite lucky as i'd just went past my mate on his ZX-6 and luckily the fairing didn't hit him or come into his path.

Swiftb38 - the tank is a cover so a nice easy swap.

I've looked at the Chinese fairings and see some options to pay an extra £250 for better paint, i'm tempted to do this and get the wheels powdercoated orange over the winter.

The alternative is swap it for a 1000rr repsol but I quite like the 600, it's fun to ride.

Had a fairing bolt fall out on my AT this summer...which was particularly annoying as the other bastards had to be dremeled out when I wanted to take it off:roll:
