Posted: 07:31 - 19 Oct 2011 Post subject: Hazard Perception Test, Tips Needed |
 |
|
Hi all,
I've decided to the DAS, so need to do the theory test first, I purchased the official DSA biker pack and with that I am happy that I can pass the theory test.
Can anyone give me advice on how best to prepare for the hazard perception part of the test, I cannot find 'real test' examples to practice on ( probs my lack of search skills ).
Any links to good web-sites or recommended software, or any other tips?
I'm hoping to do my test before January 2012 and before the new test standards come in.
Hope the duff winter weather doesn't make it an unhappy experience, but have no choice if I want to complete the DAS before the new test standards come into place in January 2012.
Tnx |

The official DSA stuff with a practice theory (which is mostly common sense): https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/TheoryTest/DG_4022534
I don't know of any hazard perception practice clips but having done a few they're all the same rubbish, the bike one wasn't specific for bikes.
The only advice I can really give is watch the tutorial, and only click when you see a real potential hazard. It seems to want you to click for everyone walking down the pavement but I only pressed when it looked like something was coming into my path and/or I'd have to slow down or manouver.
I even got bored of waiting for hazards on a few clips and just clicked to average out my response for the clip. Still passed!
Good luck. |

If you have an iPhone, there is an app that I used called 'HPT free'. As the name suggests, its free It has 5 clips in it, that gave me an idea of what to expect. Obviously, they cant show you the actual exact clips you will see, but they are very close.
I did no other practice than this, and had no problems when I took my theory.
Good luck on the theory and DAS, it's a great feeling once you pass! |

I've just started doing a hazard perception tutorial. What a joke.
After nearly 30 years driving I'd handle 99% of the so-called hazards without event consciously noticing them, which explains why I'm not doing too well at this computer-game. A perspective-less "staring straight ahead" view of the road from a car that's often way too close to the one in front and too fast for the road conditions is just too far removed from reality for me.
I started off trying to 'play the game' the way they want you to, but it looks like a better technique is to click once on anything that could vaguely be hazardous, then click again if it actually becomes a hazard, then a third time just for luck. Providing you don't click non-stop it doesn't seem to matter as you only get scored on the click that's nearest to the start of the hazard.
Like all computer games practice makes perfect.
I suppose it's better than nothing for a brand new road user with next to no road craft or someone who's never gone further than the daily commute & the weekly Tescos run. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,
the men in white coats are coming to take me away.
