hi

i have a 19 year old gs500 twin and i love it! if i ride normal it has good power upto 6k then goes very flat untill it hits 8k then takes off like the clappers untill it redlines.
if i take off from standing start at very high revs the bike goes very well and i dont feel the dead spot and it will get to the bikes top speed with no problems,
but if im going along in top gear doing say 70mph then open it up it will be just flat with not much power but it will reach top speed
i have never had a paralel twin before, i had a ntv650 vtwin before and i thought the gs500 twin would be the same but the gs has simalar sort of power to a 4 cylinder bike with a power band, i will check plugs air filter and carbs tomorow if its not raining, at first i thought my gs had been restricted but it will pull to 110mph so i guess thats the issue

thanks

It may have been badly restricted. It's certainly worth having a poke around the carbs to see if there's anything suspicious going on down there.

try dropping the needle clip position 1 notch,
this will either make it worse or better,
but its free and easy to do,

just undo the 4 screws on each carb top and remove the cover,
there is a large spring under neth and the diagphram, pull them out along with the slide attached,
the needle is in the bottom of the slide,

leave the carbs in position when doing this, pulling out the gs carbs is a bastard of a job
