Winter touring...

So my wife has divorced me, I've bought myself a cheap@ss bike I can tour on and I'm thinking of taking a month off, unpaid.

I was thinking of slinging a leg over and heading South for a month. However, before I try to re-invent the wheel, I was wondering if any of you had experience of touring during winter. Before anyone says 'heated grips' or 'wear warm clothing,' I've already done that bit and ridden in snow etc... and have been riding all year round for the last couple of decade.

Where do you go, what do you do and have any of you been crazy enough to spend a month trundling around in December?

I've thought about this recently.

I'd head south west and spend the time in spain and portugal.

It's be like a half decent british summer in december usually.

Staying with a British person in Spain a couple of years ago he said when he was over there in December they snow - not great when power was courtesy of an old car battery in a rather ramshackle windy stone cottage!

If your going to take the month off, you could always head down to greece, and maybe take in a few of the islands while your there.

You could do Athens in a week, spend a 2 weeks touring, then leisurely come back up.

Your plan is pretty much what I said I'd do if/when the mrs leaves me.

I understand Portugal is a little less cold than Greece in December and quicker by ferry. Six hours of sunshine per day... that sounds OK.

Friend of mine did Portugal a few years back and really enjoyed it. Where ever you end up, the weather is usually guaranteed to be better than here so you'll have a ball.

Portugal is great and obviously I am a little bias living in the Algarve!!!
The weather in the North is virtually on par with the uk and they even have a natural ski resort in the mountains but further down south heading for the Algarve it is much warmer and normally dryer(Raining outside as I type Crying or Very sad )
Hubby and I are off on my first long ride next week leaving the Algarve and traveling to Salamanca in Spain for a weekend hopefully all good.

There is a company over here called Algarveflyride which is like a b&b ran by bikers for bikers you can find them on face book and on the web.

We are also hoping to go from the Algarve Via Spain and into Gibralter in the early part of next year too.

FZR400 (blown engine), ZXR750 (blown engine), ZX6R (accident), CBR600 which had engine issues after which I learned to change gear..., CBR900, CBR924 (stolen), CB600, CB1300 (everything blew up), BMW K1300GT (written off, hit from rear while stationary), Bandit 1250 for a couple of months, Triumph Sprint ST 1050 (nicked) and somewhere in there, I wrote off a Ducati 748 at Cadwell.

I don't mind her leaving, it's just I'd prefer it if she hadn't left with the contents of my wallet.
