taken from eurosport.

Quote:
Marco Simoncelli has died from the injuries he sustained in a crash on the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix. He was 24.
Simoncelli was fighting for fourth with Alvaro Bautista when he lost the front of his bike and slid across the circuit, into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, both of whom appeared to hit the Honda.
Simoncelli lay stricken on the track after the crash, his helmet having come off during the incident.
He was taken by ambulance to the circuit's medical centre, but at 4.56pm local time it was announced he had succumbed to his injuries.
The death was the first fatality in MotoGP since Daijiro Katoh, also a Gresini rider, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix. The last fatal accident in the world championship series came when Moto2 rider Showa Tomizawa was killed at Misano last September.

Does anyone know the cause? The BBC coverage was covering Edwards and Rossi, then out of the blue Simo's bike side swipes them and knocks them off the track, they switched to the helo footage and you could briefly see Simo's body lying in the middle of the track then they switched to a paddock view and swiftly changed subject to tyres.

Rossi ran into the back of Simo's neck popping his helmet off. I'd hazard a guess at broken neck and head injuries. Rossi had nowhere to go.

He was no stranger to the gravel trap. He often overdid things in the first few laps, something i was worried about today when they said he was going to be running the harder tire which isn't at it's best from the start. I suspect he was trying to keep up with guys on better rubber and overdid things. He was lanky as hell and could jam his knee into the ground and keep the bike upright it it started to slide from under him. It looks like he did that but then the tires gripped as the do in a high side only the bike was too far over for it to flick up and over as they usually do so instead it shot off sideways into the path of edwards.

You can visibly see Edward's bike raise up as it strikes Simo's head. Then the helmet gets thrown out to the side and Simo's body is left sprawling across the track.

Yup, if he'd let go it'd likely have flipped off of him and he'd have slid straight. He was hanging on and racing right to the end.

So awful for Edwards and Rossi, there was nothing they could do. Sad all round.

RIP Marco.

He had so much talent, I could see him being a future champion. And from what you saw of him off track he was a great character. He will be greatly missed.

I bet his face alone was a mess after sliding down the tarmac face down with no lid at those speeds, never mind his other injuries.

I wonder if they can investigate the force sustained by the helmet in order for it to give way like they did for Massa in F1 (also an Arai), requires explanation really otherwise there's a chance he'd still be here.

The helmet didn't appear to have given way as such. Watch the video closely and you can see the strap flailing around which suggests it wasn't secured correctly which would be a very strange thing indeed.
