Hello,
Soon to be taking the Mod.2 test, and was hoping for some valuable tips, please.
- What typically constitutes instant fail;
- What is the toughest element of Mod.2
Any other tips that come to mind, please.
Much appreciated ____________________ Kwak 636 (2005)

Make another road user take avoiding action = fail.
Just about everything else is or can be marked as a minor, if you haven't already failed the First Impressions Test. Spank out a few £££ on a hi vis bib if you don't already have one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Indicators being left on when passing a road you're not turning into seems to be a pretty common route to failure.
Like the others have said, chill out, keep your wits about you and don't do anything silly for 45 mins. ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." Hunter S Thompson

Indicators, indicators and INDICATORS!!!!
If you forget it one time and it's in the wrong place, (a junction, with a car/bike/bus) odds are you will fail.
Forget them at the right time (not going past a junction) and you should just get a minor, as long as you don't keep doing it!
Drill yourself between now and your test. Even if it's 6 weeks away. You will be glad you did.
Obs, VERY important. Don't forget the Obs/Lifesavers. Again, drill yourself now until test day. Train those muscles to remember.
BTW, I can comment on this because I JUST PASSED THIS MORNING!!!!!
Sorry, got carried away
Good luck to you. ____________________ My Lane Position is always AWESOME!! |

I'd be making sure to get the first impression a good one like Rogerborg says. Sure, exams are meant to be marked against a specific sheet, but if the examiner is 50/50 on whether to pass you or not then it's almost inevitable his impression of you will make the judgement.
When I showed up for mine I was wearing matching gear. The gear consisted of a HJC Helmet, RST textiles (2 piece, zips together) and nitro boots with full shin protection. I was also wearing leather gloves with fibreglass(?) knuckle protection.
And then to top it all off I made sure that I'd got my hi-vis already on my jacket so that when the examiner saw me putting on the jacket he'd notice that I'd ridden there wearing one (to show I'm sensible). Also used a pin thingy to keep the hi-vis closed in-case the wind caused the velcro to open.
As for what not to do for an instant fail. Just don't do anything stupid, or dangerous. E.G. If you go up the wrong way of a dual carriage way then you're guaranteed to instantly fail.
A simple fail to do is when turning right from traffic lights into coming traffic. If your light goes from red-green the move to the turning point and wait for a gap. If you stay behind the white line (at the traffic lights) and they go back to red before you've had a chance to go, you've failed.
There are quite a few minors which are easy to get as well though. So make sure to keep the right distance from parked cars to avoid a minor, and also indicate even in right/left hand only lanes to avoid a minor.
Good luck
And well done Alex, I'm glad the over-worrying didn't hinder you in the end ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |

Thank you
The issue is that I have my rider jacket, protective gloves, but only have jeans and timberlands. This is because of my non-existent budget, I cannot go and buy the full gear in one go.
I'm self-prepped, that's how bad the budget is I spoke to my Mod.1 examiner about this and he said that what I had on was perfectly acceptable, and that he could understand. Mind, I doubt my Mod.2 examiner (should they be a different one to my Mod1) will provide me the opportunity to explain my attire.
As for the Hi-vis, I have that and wear it to and from the test centre
As for riding ability, I've been practicing correct positioning, observations, speed and indicating as I ride so that it all remains second nature. But you never know what happens on the day (morning in my case)
Thank you all for being so helpful and forthcoming with your tips ____________________ Kwak 636 (2005)

Slightly difficult to do, but try to be calm and relaxed. Knowing what you need to do and being calm about it will make a big difference to your focus and being physically loose. Stress will introduce an additional unnecessary hurdle.
Relax and try to enjoy it! ____________________ Current Bikes - Kawasaki ZX-6R (636) | BMW G650GS |

jordanmoore & Alex_B - Thank you for responding swiftly and informatively; very helpful. If either/both of you are in London ever, a drink for each of you is on me
ElliotReidMD - that would be horrible! My wisdom tooth sometimes catches my cheek when chewing and it flippin hurts Will refrain from chewing gum on the morning. I will have to skip brekkie as my test is 08:15hrs - another self-inflicted challenge/obstacle - rush hour traffic! ____________________ Kwak 636 (2005)

Hey mate, I'm in SE London and I'll take a beer
8:15 is a good time. That was mine this morning actually.
Traffic *should* be your friend. It should give you less opportunity for mistakes but they are not daft, you will be on roads without traffic as well.
Good luck matey ____________________ My Lane Position is always AWESOME!! |
