I've started getting into a little bit of mixing now and again. Nothing serious, just have a mess about with a couple of songs now and again when I'm bored!

I'm using virtual DJ which I have to say is the best bit of software I have ever downloaded!!

I've just had a go at mixing 'love don't let me go' with 'change the way you kiss me'. They both have the same bpm and are only a semitone apart so the key change bit on virtual dj sorts that nicely and they sound pretty good together!

Anyone got any other good songs that are quite simple and easy to mix?

Also anyone know virtual DJ like the back of their hand and got and good tips for me?

I'm doing pretty good at understanding most of it but still struggling with the odd bit. The one that's most annoying though is not being able to change a songs BPM without the pitch changing so if someone could let me know how to do that it would be great!

Cheers all.

You can use the keylock function to keep the pitch the same when you increase the speed. Activate the keylock when the track is at its normal bpm, then you can change tempo without the pitch altering.

On VDJ tho, it is shit.

You get distortion in the sound, the bass clips weirdly and ultimately it just is ineffective.

I'm sure some mixing programs (Traktor, hopefully ITCH Wink ) have really good keylock function, but VDJ doesn't.

Are you using a controller, or just using the computer?

I'll have a mess around with that then.

I've found its alright on some songs and not so great on others when just using the manual key change.

I'm using an external sound card with my laptop and my speakers plugged into that. It won't let me do anything more technical than that unless I upgrade which is fair enough.

I assume in clubs and that when you see them with the headphones on one ear its them listening to another song in the to see if they mix okay?

You got it. You will only really need to do that if actually want to do some more complex stuff than just putting a couple of tunes together, and you'd need to get some other kit too.

Yeah, I don't expect any time soon I'll be a DJ in clubs haha.

VDJ will let you do that though, ie listen to one song on an external set of speakers providing you've got the right set up which is pretty cool.

I assume you're into it also?

For anyone who's interested, a little vid of the 2 tracks I mixed. Not perfect but reasonable.

Shame youtube seems to have got the sound and video all wrong but you get the gist.

I will upload my crappy mixes I made in VDJ tonight.

I can't remember fully but I think I mixed blue monday - new order with another brick in the wall - pink floyd but with a kind of modern bass/electro feel to it.

The more you use VDJ, the easier it gets, lots of little things you can discover. Learn about cueing and you can have multiple starts to tunes. It is crazy.

VDJ is ok to be honest with you but its no Traktor or Serato used with proper turntables.

However if you like VDJ, consider getting a used controller to make things easier and get you using the proper pitch control etc.

Something cheap like a Numark Mixtrack pro will do for basics.

Find a copy of Ableton Live. It will blow your mind.
