Some of you may be aware I bought a 2010 ybr on ebay a this week, before the money changed hands my Dad asked for a scan of the V5 doc. which they said okay, and asked for his email adress. After nto being sent it, my Dad called up and asked and the prick says, it's very irregular to share information over the internet, and wouldn't send the V5 and then cancelled the sale.

I'd been waiting months and finally bought a bike, and now I'm back to square one again. I'm so sick of this. Crying or Very sad

I have no idea what a V5 document is, but it sounds to me like he might of got a better deal locally, therefor cancelled the sale... either that or he could of been a scammer.

Sorry to hear about that though fella, there are plenty of good bikes around at decent prices, you've just got to find them. Keep up the search.

Thumbs UpSmile

It's basically another name for the logbook proving it's yours etc.
Yeah, I'll find one eventually but it feels pretty bad to come so close to getting a bike, then failing.

Where are you trying to buy this bike from?
You need to go see the bike, check it out. Hand over your money and take the bike. Then get them to sort the V5 out for you (fill in your details there and take the green slip).

Well I was buying it from plymouth, it was pretty much new, so I was going to take a risk and just get it delivered. Bit silly I know, but it's not an unusual thing to do is it...?

Was the final sell price under the sellers expected price, did you get it for a good price? He could just be reluctant to sell.

I think your dad scared him off by asking for a copy of a V5 - i'd have run away too! wtf was he thinking? It is just not done that way. I bet the guy thought your dad was dodgy....he lost you the sale mate. You just turn up to see the bike, then ask to see the relevant documents there & then - if not available walk away....I think the seller was legit.

Oh really? hmm, we did get it for a couple hundred quid down on the asking price. I think my Dad just wanted to see it so he knew it was theirs, eg not stolen. Sad

No way I'd scan my V5 and email it to someone either. If you wanna see the V5, come see the V5 and see the bike too. Then HPI it over the phone.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, just wondering why would it be a problem? What is the risk? Confused

Buying vehicles involves a lot of trust on both sides really...it's pretty safe to say no-one seems to trust anyone these days - and yes, there are a LOT of shits out there but you have to give someone a fair go first. Your dad has gone straight for the "I don't trust you Mr Seller".....Mr Seller doesn't like that & now doesn't trust your dad......your dad got into a great position by negotiating a price you were happy with & then screwed it up. Should've just gone to see the bike to check it over & shake hands etc & do relevant checks (HPI, V5). A lot of sellers are nervous about strangers coming to their homes etc...you spooked them.....just chill a bit next time Thumbs Up

I'll keep that in mind for next time, took so long to find this one and now it's gone. can't believe how hard it is to find a decent 125 in the south west.

I suggested that, my dad thinks that due to them not being to fond of him/me they might do something to the bike etc.

V5 contains all the information needed to clone a stolen bike - Reg No, chassis number, colours etc.

You could be fishing for a V5 to clone for a bike you have stolen or has been written off in an accident.

It's not unreasonable for them to be paranoid over such a request, but then it's no less unreasonable for you to be paranoid over buying a bike online. You'd have to ask yourself - what extra security would you have from seeing a scan of the logbook before setting off to collect the bike? I can't think of one myself, the reg number is good enough to do a HPI check and you can check the engine and frame numbers when you arrive.

Don't lose heart over this minor setback though - take your time and the right deal will come along.

Ask the seller to MOT it and you'll pay asking price. Don't tell your dad, he'll probably want a nut and bolt restoration performing.

No mileage stated. That's odd.

125's are plentiful on the second hand market - don't be over keen as one will turn up. Use ebay, gumtree and adtrader and you'll find one.

Sorry if this causes offence, but it sounds more like your dad was the paranoid one there. As you know, the V5 document holds personal details of the current owner. For him to scan that in and send it to some random person online is risky.

Fact of the matter is that you should have gone and collected the bike in person and checked all the documents before handing the cash over.

I don't blame the seller for backing out when someone asks for a scan of the logbook like that. If he'd asked for the plate number to get it checked and the guy backed out then fair dos, something dodgy. But I wouldn't want to scan my logbook in and send it to someone if I was selling.

Lessons learned, it seems. More valuable than any bike you could want. Might even turn out a good thing.
