Here's an interesting comment I thought I'd make about the bane of all motorists lives; Speed Cameras.

I travel along the Black Country Route (a stretch of 40-50 mph dual carriageway) near West Bromwich on a fairly regular basis and am aware of numerous Gatso's along the route and don't speed as a result. This morning, I was overtaken by a BMW on a stretch that had (I thought) no cameras.

As he came past, a speed camera cunningly screened by foliage flashed twice. There were, apparently, none of the usual road markings used to identify distance travelled between photos but, as the camera flashed the lines suddenly became visible. It was as if they had been painted using a reflective paint that was invisible under normal daylight conditions!!

My questions are:

(a) Is it not an infringement to obscure the cameras presence?
(b) Is anyone else aware of the "hidden" distance markers?

Seems the Feds are getting sneakier!!

Good question - there's a speed camera on the Cov Road (A45) by a BP garage that was visible all the way down the road a few years ago - then someone cunningly planted a tree behind it, and now, you can't see the camera unless you stand side on or in front of it!!

Didn't the legislation change recently regarding visibility and distance markings?

I know that, originally, they were all the plain battleship grey units but, after some legislation was passed, they had to ensure that the more visible yellow panel was fitted (and this was retrospective for those already installed).

I know that there was media coverage of Gatso's that were moved because they were "concealed" but I am not certain on the legislation

That's horrible. We've got the same thing, but ours are on two wheels and chase after you if you're doing more than 5mph over. There seems to be no rules here as to where they can and cannot hide. And definitely no lines as they're always mobile. You'd be surprised how hard it is to miss a giant white bike and a black uniform when it's behind a bush or a building or both. Thumbs Down

Got my one and only ticket from a bike cop hiding behind a tree near my dad's neighborhood. 12mph over the limit in a 35, coming out of a 45mph zone. Rolling Eyes

Sneaky American cops eh? Unlucky!!

Down that same road (A45), the authorities say they have switched off 2 cash cameras, because of inappropriate location - one was hidden behind a 10ft high sign, and the other was somewhere that hadn't had it's allotted number of crashes in 3 years. This was several months back - funny how they have left them there, with fresh distance markers & the 'bright' yellow coating looking clean...

The only one I can think of thats obscured at all on the A45 is coming up towards the Airport from Birmingham way, in the central reservation, though tbh it seems fairly visible to me.

Where's this stealth camera Pete? road and location?

near my college, in amersham, theres a camera obscured by a bush in the front garden of a block of flats, but its not illegal apparently cos its the residents of the flats job to cut the bush, not the council's. thats how sneeky the f*ckers are getting. the bush was there before the speed camera by the way....

The one switched off which was obscured by the sign is on the way into Birmingham, on the Stonebridge Island, on the opposite side to the you mention Phoenix. That one is fine, perfectly legal.

I've never come across hidden markings, I bet they're springing up all over the place now Mad

If I've got this correct only need to make visible if the money raised is to be used by the authority running the camera (rather than straight to government). Also camera must be in proven accident blackspot (rules for number of crashes, accident, etc. - believe cannot be just a speeding deterrent).

The camera's only need to have reflective markings and be visible in areas where the Police keep the proceeds of that camera, if the funds go to central Government then there is no requirement for them to be visible and they can ve hidden under current regulations.

As far as the markings are concerned, these are calibration lines and again are not a legal requirement which is why mobile camera's can be used!

Wotcha.

I use that road almost every day ( and night, come to think of it ) and I ain't noticed a 'sneaky' camera - - - but you can bet I'll be looking for it now.
I've noticed that if you travel towards Asda at around 60 mph, the camera on the opposite side of the road will flash ( allegedly Laughing )

Further to this, even in an area where they do keep the proceeds then they can quite happily hide a camera, but are not meant to claim the proceeds from a hidden camera back.

Not that the Treasury seem to care and are quite happy to refund the income to the scamera units even when they do not comply with the rules.

All the best
