Any Model collectors on here?

I used to collect model cars as a kid which I still have boxed up somewhere, 95% of which are Ferrari road cars. Looking to start again with some racing bikes maybe.

Which ones are worth buying in terms of future value and also detail?

I used to make/collect models when I was a kid.
Sadly I always ended up breaking them or my Mum would give them away Twisted Evil .

When I get to old to throw my leg over a motorbike, I might go back to model making.

I built some models of road layouts/traffic schemes for work once for some consultation event (on overtime too, happy days). When they were exhibited the mayor tried to pick up one of the cars whilst saying, "does this car roll?". He left four wheels glued to the road surface....

If you're thinking of models as an investment, it's usually very, very long term.

A phrase you will see a lot in collector's circles is 'mint & boxed', so whatever you buy, always keep all the packaging and don't display models in direct sunlight, because the paint can fade etc; the smallest chip or scratch, or a missing box, can turn your collector's item into a worthless piece of crap.

Collectors get very anal about detail, so if, for example, a model came with a set of stickers so you could decorate it yourself, don't put them on, it makes it worth more if the sticker sheet is intact.

As for what will be collectable in the future, look around at what's collectable now.

Things that are likely to become style or sporting icons are usually a good bet; similarly, models of run of the mill stuff can get collectable, because no-one thinks anything of them at the time, so they don't take care of them.

Also, cheap stuff can become very collectable; a 5 quid model falls into the toy category, so little Johnny plays with it, smashes it against the chair legs and eventually paints it purple, so mint & boxed toys can end up being very rare.

Good quality can actually be a downside; I've a couple of Burago models that were exceptionally good quality for the price, but because they were so good, people bought them to look at, so there's millions of them in good nick; a tenner 20 odd years ago, still only worth 15 quid today.

If you really want to get into it, look out for models with glaring mistakes; you sometimes find an early run which have horrendous errors, like wrong colours or incorrect numbers.

Later, they correct it, after all the anoraks send them detailed emails and, hey presto, those early ones are worth some money.

You can also look around for different coloured boxes, or models made for different markets, but now we're into serious anoraking and you may have to grow a thick beard and knit your own underpants, before you can reach this level. Laughing

If I were you, I would just start collecting whatever you like and you might get lucky in 30 years and discover you're sitting on something worth money.

I could bore for Britain on the subject of collecting models and kits, but a lot of it is luck really.

I used to collect model cars when I was 10-15 and put them all under my floorboards. Haven't looked at them for 4 years or so. Hoping they will go up in value.
