Hi, been riding on L plates for a few months now and loving every minute of it!

I use my bike for my daily commute which is about 15 miles each way on a variety of roads ie dual carriage ways and single track roads so Im getting plenty practice in for taking my test next year. (thats next years resolution!!). My only concern is Im a little bit apprehensive about riding through the winter months. The cold doesnt concern me, Im just a little worried about the ice.

Would be really appreciative if anyone had any tips for braving the elements.

Sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere.

Cheers,

Phil

As am I, so I'll be watching this thread with a keen eye! Smile

The main points that I'm understanding so far are:
Arrow Try and keep the bike as upright as possible through corners (even if that means leaning off the side like a monkey).
Arrow You may, in some areas, have to ride with your feet down to act as "stabilizers" encase you begin to slip.
Arrow Allow atleast 10 times the braking distance you usually would.
Arrow Touching the front brake, even slightly, may cause the bike to slip out from under you.
Arrow Cagers expect bikes even less during the winter, so keep a keen eye out at junctions.
Arrow Make sure your lights are working correctly and brightly.
Arrow Expect to have to travel slower than normal, and increase the gap between you and cars.

Hmmmm winter riding in ice and snow......OK, so heres the heads up.
DO NOT get on the bike unless you absolutely have too if it's ice and snow. If you indeed do have no choice then here's my advice (based on one winters riding)
1. Keep your distance from vehicles in front by at least 6-10 seconds.
2. Keep both feet on the floor if necessary.
3. ALWAYS wear some kind of high vis gear.
4. DO NOT ride the bike unless you really have too. If you have a work mate who'll give you a lift in his car or can catch the bus, then do so.
