Just wanted to share this with you... it makes for sombre reading but i hope for people who ride like i used to, it makes you think... it did me. I tell this as i saw it, with my own eyes last night. I used to look at Coll and see myself in 30 years. A committed, skilled, highly respected rider. My bike is now for sale and i have lost a close friend.

We met up at Premier bikes (Askern, Doncaster) at about 7pm and shared a coffee and a fag, there was about 20 of us in total, riding everyhing from supermotos to CBR400RRs, to Fire blades and SP-2's.

At about 710 we departed going down the Askern, Sykehouse, Airmyn, Howden road.. as we have done every Sunday and Monday for the last 4 months.

All was well, the more novice riders didnt try to keep up, and the experience riders were riding fast but not stupid. I was about 6th down the line of bikes from the front. Coll, on his GSXR1000 k2, was 3rd from the front.

As i rounded a sharp, 1st gear right hander, i noticed that the riders in front had stopped, the lead 2 had also stopped past the apex of the next left hander. Inbetween the two groups there was a taxi. Parked half on the road and half on the grass verge, the front nearside was all smashed up... the driver was in tears, and as i looked to the back of the cab, i saw Colls head sticking out from under the rear wheels and axle, trapped.

A midwife in the car behind the taxi was giving first aid, an RTA was dialled into 999 and necessary people sent. 2 fire tenders, 7 police cars, 2 ambulances turned up in 10 mins.

Coll was declared dead at the scene at approximately 745pm. He leaves behind a wife and child.

I will always remember Coll as a caring, genuine, honest guy, who always expressed his thoughts, and would pick you up if you were down. He had more experience on two wheels than any other person in the group did that night and had been riding for the best part of 21 years.... more time than ive been alive.

He rode committed all the time, and lived for his wife, child and of course, his bikes.

The exact cause of the crash is yet unknown, why he managed to lowside the bike on such a gentle left-hand bend and speeds not considered inappropriate, is a mystery. The police accident investigation unit will determine that.

The police were spot on last night, and i would like to Thank and congratulate everybody who attended the scene, they did a wonderful job in ensuring we were alright.

My condolences go out to Coll's wife, his child, and of course every body who knew him.

Rest in Peace, Collin.

Sad

Sorry to hear about that.

It's terrible hearing about deaths, it's often to the most skilled of riders too.

Rest in peace, Collin.

Thats really awful, I really feel for his family, and you as his friend. It's things like this that make me want to lock my bike in the garage and never get it out again, best wishes to his family and friends.

Horrible thing.

However, from what you say, he wasn't riding like a twat. So I don't really see how it should make anyone re-evaluate their riding or think anything other than 'yup, there's potential for getting yourself killed every time you go out on the road'. Which I would hope most people are aware of.

My condolences go to his family and all who knew Colin,he obviously was an inspiration to you.

The immediate reaction is to stop riding yourself but as bike riders we all know the risks and we accept them. I believe my friends and family who ride wouldn't want me to stop if they died and i certainly don't want them to stop if it happens to me.

Sad indeed.
The owner of a small shop where I got my first ever pushbike that wasn't my sisters discard was killed not long after.
Also, a man from my trials club was killed on his road bike not long ago. We held an extra event in memory and all proceeds went to his wife and two kids. I must have been speaking to him two weeks before!

Rest in Peace.

R.I.P Colin, being new to the riding scene this is hard reading. I get split into two minda about riding, but I know when I got the bike that I was taking a risk, but then I take a risk whenever I wake up in the morning, you never EVER know what's going to happen next. Crying or Very sad

I know it isn't really appropriate but there could of been an object on the road that could of caused this crash. Penny Coin Penny Coin

I don't wish to try and trivialise your loss, I know it's hard, and you and all those involved have my deepest sympathy, but I would be horrified if anyone quit riding as a result of my death. We all know the risks, ideally I would love to make it to 100 years, but if I had to shorten my time, I wouldn't trade anything for having experienced just one good ride. I've buried people through bike, car, cancer, heart attacks, D.I.Y accidents, and a number of other things, and no matter what the reason it always fucking hurts, but this is no reason to change what I do. We all owe the universe a death, how and when this happens is not our choice. Don't go for the 'gut reaction', take your time and grieve your loss, then look at any changes that need to be made.
