Just failed my MOT for tyres, apparently they're just past the legal limit (front tyre on the edges, rear in the middle).

Guy at the MOT quoted me £130 ride In ride out for two micheon pilot sports, or £115 loose.

Is this a good price? Also I have to go out on Saturday for a friends party, like a 8 mile trip there at 8am and come back about midnight, would you risk It? (apparently the MOT is now invalid because I've failed.. was due on the 29th) would you risk this journey? What happens if I'm caught?

AFAIK its not a free retest, but I could be cheeky and ask for a free/discounted test and see what they say.

Should be free.

£130 fitted seems ok

Online single its about 63 for front and 58 for rear.

Check your pressures afterwards...also ask on prices for ContiGo! tyres... I never had an issue with them!

price seems OK, as for re-test, get it back within 10 days and they should only charge partial re-test (about half price). if it after 10 days then a full test is required

First, check yourself - it's a little suspicious that both your tyres have just gone under at the same time. Don't go by any wear indicators, check the actual tread depth. 1mm across 75% of the width of the tyre (or as wide as the original treads go).

That said, it's a fair price and you're as well not riding your luck for the sake of eking another few hundred miles out of them. New tyres are one of the few things that do add a bit of value to a vehicle.

The price looks fine for a ride-in-ride-out. They can charge you for a partial re-test since you took it away, but you should be able to wangle a freebie.

Just be clear that you need the bike back on the same day, not when it suits them.

Cheers guys, your advice is muchly appreciated. I'm going ahead with buying the tyres; it saves arguing with the MOT guys, they will need replacing sooner rather than later and fresh tyres should be better for the winter ( I hope Thumbs Up )

Just got back from college (yes I know I shouldn't have made that trip, but I needed to go for a UCAS appointment) and phoned the guys up and booked in the tyres to be fitted (they've got to order them).

Booked the bike in for Monday morning at 9AM - they reckon they'll take about an hour and a half to fit the tyres then they'll do the retest straight after (which they're giving me for free as I'm getting the tyres done there within the 10 days). So with any luck I'll be alright again by lunchtime.

Other than the two tyres there was nothing wrong with the bike (no advisories). He did mention that the steering wasn't quite straight, which I already knew (and he said I probably already knew), but said it was fine because it wouldn't trap anyone's hands. So hopefully It'll sail through the MOT after having the tyres done.

Steering not quite straight? Is it something bent from the bike being dropped or a wheel alignement issue?

It might be worth getting them to check the wheel alignement and chain tension while they have back spindle loose.

The bike has been dropped before. I came off practically straight after my CBT, and when I bought it, it looked like it had perhaps been dropped or something. So I'm presuming that something's a little bent.

I'm not too fussed about the steering though - it's been like that the entire time (since april) that I've had it and I've never felt any problems, so it's been though mod1+2 like that as well Laughing

Interesting point - I just presumed they'd check the wheel alignment + chain tension whilst fitting the wheel, is that not the case?

Some places just leave the adjusters alone so the wheel goes on exactly how it came off, weather its right or wrong.

They wont on the cbr, it'll be an absolute arse to put the chain back on Laughing Even splitting it it still wont fit nicely. The adjusters are inside the swing arm on these horrendously built contraptions.

Reason I say horrendous, these are quite possibly the worst bikes I've ever had to rebuild/maintain. Many times have I removed the rear wheel and spent nearly an hour reassembling it Rolling Eyes

If you mean 29th Nov then dont you get 7 days to get the MOT re-done?
I asked the guy at the garage I had mine done at (Devon) saying if it failed on something major how many days do I have to get it retested as I was going home in the next few days, and he said 7.

Yeah, the original MOT was due for the 29th of Nov. I was under the assumption that if I failed the MOT on the 3rd then I'd still have a few weeks to get it fixed, and that I could ride it up until the 29th.

Much to my surprise the guy says to me "and you already know that now the bike's failed it's MOT it cancels your old one." My gut sunk at that point "uhm, nope. I didn't know that. I thought I could ride it until the original one expired?" Whilst thinking "damn, this leaves me screwed for college/already arranged stuff."

I didn't ask how long I'd got to get the MOT done in, but the MOT sheet says something along the lines of if I get the repairs done within 10 days without taking the bike off the premises I get a free partial retest (any more days and it has to be a full one), and if I take the bike and return it within 10 days I pay a partial fee for a partial retest.

Phoned the guys up and booked the bike in for Monday (7th nov), at 9AM, it's the earliest that they could do. Getting the tyres done and then the (free) retest should hopefully be straight after, so I'll be able to ride away. I'm having to miss a morning of college, but never mind, the bike comes first Laughing

I think I have the tread that you mentioned on mine (Not 100% sure tho) and I paid £100 fitted for rear, on top of the MOT - So price sounds good. Thumbs Up

I was under the impression if you put a vehicle in for an MOT before the previous MOT expires and the vehicle fails. The previous MOT is still valid until it expires.

But if the vehicle failed on something that made it illegal to drive under construction & use regs, then it will obviously be illegal to use until the fault is corrected (as it would have been anyway on the way to the MOT). But MOT will be in force.
I.e you would not get done for no MOT but would for the vehicle defects- and as you have the failure notification there is no way you could try and use ignorance of the fault in mitigation.
I read this recently as my bike has MOT on Tuesday. If you are interested I will find where I read this information.

That was my impression too. I guess it stands to reason that if the tyres are no longer legal then I'm not allowed to ride it (can you imagine dealing with insurance with illegal tyres! Laughing )

I've been told, by the MOT guy, that I'm allowed to ride to and from the test centre so it's all good. I'm actually rather looking forwards to having some new tyres on it for the winter Smile
