Milton Keynes biker banned for 150mph speeding web film

Robert Owens from Milton Keynes was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years

A motorcyclist who filmed himself speeding at 150mph and put the footage on the internet has been sentenced to 51 weeks jail, suspended for two years.

Robert Mark Owens, 48, of Whaddon Way, Bletchley, Milton Keynes, admitted dangerous driving at Aylesbury Crown Court and was banned for five years.

He used a helmet-mounted camera to record himself on four occasions in April 2011.

Some of the footage was uploaded on to the social networking site YouTube.

The videos, filmed in Milton Keynes and Bletchley, showed Owens doing wheelies, riding on footpaths and weaving in and out of traffic.

He was arrested after police received an anonymous call about the videos.

In addition to the ban and suspended sentence Owens was told at the court sitting in Amersham that he must complete 150 hours community work, his bike has been confiscated and he has been given 10 points on his licence.

PC Steve Roebuck said: "This was amongst the worst examples of dangerous driving I have seen during my time as a police officer, and the fact Owens willingly put himself and others in such danger almost beggars belief.

"It is a miracle he survived many of the situations he put himself in and to upload this footage on to a social networking site to boast about what he had done is abhorrent.

"In his own words he has accepted that he was 'an accident waiting to happen'."

The clips they have on there aren't *that* bad.
It's funny you can get a sentence like that without actually doing anyone any harm.
However many kittens must have been trembling in their homes.

I don't get it. I mean, I get that it's not right, but I don't understand how this copper can say it's the worst he's ever seen. Does he live in a shoebox?

He can't wheelie for shit.

Seems pretty tame to me.

Bit of a knobber for putting it up on youtube and showing pictures of the clocks AND actually getting done for it.

Maybe he just needs a better lawyer.

The A5 dual carriageway that runs down the west side is very quiet during the day, it would make a safety vans Christmas, funny thing is I have never seen one anywhere near it! Confused

I really think we need some kind of 'expert witness' to use in these situations to point out that actually the police's understanding is based on their own fears from their training (or just propaganda) and not reality.

As an aside, does anyone know what statute allows them to seize the vehicle?

Mine was seized as evidence so they could compare any parts to the video, such as screen decals, resevoir sock, color/type of gloves holding the bars, yoke sticker etc.

They also seized ALL my riding gear no matter how old so they could match it up to the video from the reflection in the mirrors.

Just makes me sick.... He gets a banned for 5 years for doing 150mph - in some shots its shocking, but he dose no harm.
Yet, for helping to kill a child (Jason Owens) gets let out in 2 years.
Justice system is fooking awfull.

It does look harsh, but he was banned for repeatedly riding well in excess of the limit, with the strong aggravating factor of encouraging others to do it. Remember, we only get to see a selected snippet of the case - the court got the whole story.

Orite so I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for writing this...

He got a harsh sentence but we should not justify riding like that.
This is most likely due to his age (old enough to know better attitude). It is quite serious when considering cases, such as below:

In the case of R v Larke [2010] 1 Cr App R (CA) a 74 year old was imprisoned for two years for causing the death of two persons on a motorcycle (considered as vulnerable road users) due to a slip in concentration. Under proportionality it could be a justified sentence even if the offender was remorseful and had a low risk of re-offending. However, when taking into the account the age of the defendant there was a reduction to 39weeks custodial sentence.
Taken from some of my previous commentary on sentencing

He didn't kill anyone, but he put people at risk. Imagine if he hit someone crossing the road, the result would be a another negative report for bikers. Anyway, not saying that it isn't fun to blast about, but you got to accept if you get caught your going to receive some serious punishment.

Quite agree.

If you're going to stick on youtube, at least do some proper wheelies; certainly not clutching it up for it to drop down a couple of seconds later Rolling Eyes.

Otherwise, I didn't see him endangering anyone else. No crossings in the video so why would you think he would be more likely to hit someone than any other rider?
In reality, I'd expect someone riding like that to be a lot more aware of his surroundings.

to be honest, i know it doesnt sound cool, but in my opinion i dont believe that people like that deserve a licence, they give other motorcyclists a bad name, i commuted on my bike across country come rain snow ice and god knows what else and i ride high milage, and when i bought my van last year and passed my driving test, there have been time where some bikes have scared me shitless, over taking like complete twats, and i have been i situations on my bike, where they have came from nowhere, and overtook on blind bends then cars come round there corner nearly clearing us all up, its shamefull, i can remeber being in my local shopping precinct on a saturday morning when all the old pensioners are out and about, i was walking to the bank, and a guy on a zx6r did a burnout at the lights for no reason and i seen an elderly couple, and they were so scared, they didnt know what was going on, then they looked at me, i had my helment in my hand and he looked ashamed towards me! i felt like i had to apologise to them for that idiots actions, and i did for that matter, it actualy made me embarresd. the road is not some bloody playground for fair weather idiots. he behaved like an arse, he deserved everything he got.
