am i missing something here 234 bhp ? surley that isnt correct even for crank bhp making it what 210 bhp at wheel .... o.O


maby while moving with the ram air working it would be 200 ish but not on a rolling road?

Anyone who thinks that because the rolling road top speed was 248mph that it means the bike will actually do this is a complete idiot with too much money and doesn't understand a thing about wind resistance. He's suggesting that if he finds the dyno printout he is going to claim it will do 248mph.

I wouldn't buy a bike off him just for being a tool.

Hi

I would doubt a ZZR1400 would hit 248mph on a dyno on standard gearing before hitting the rev limiter (it is relatively easy to bypass the speed limiter) and the dyno speed reading isn't really anything more than a measure of gearing.

And I agree that 234bhp is in cloud cuckoo land as well.

did anybody watch the test on top gear with the veyron it needed an extra 200 bhp to do an extra few mph. this was something to do with the wind resistance at them speeds is like driving through syrup.

so surly if a bike says 248mph with no wind resistance doing that speed on a road would be significantly slower with wind restriction in the mix.

just a thought but i may be wrong.

Hi

Wind resistance increases with the square of the speed. So doing 250mph generates about 56% more drag / requires about 56% more power.

248mph on a dyno shows nothing more than gearing. The 3 main factors limiting speed are drag made up of rolling resistance (pretty much constant) and wind resistance (increases with speed) and running out of revs. If you have enough power to move the bike then you are over coming rolling resistance and can do so pretty much as easily at 250mph as at 2.5mph. One the dyno there is no wind resistance. So the only real thing that is limiting top speed is running out of revs.

If you raise the gearing to use less revs at the same speed then you also reduce rear wheel torque. Until you raise the gearing to the point that rear wheel torque can't overcome rolling resistance you will keep going faster. For example, a stock Hayabusa could produce enough rear wheel torque to overcome rolling resistance and still be accelerating when geared for over 7000mph.
