How do you fit visor inserts?

My visor is curved both horizontally and also vertically, but the insert only curves one way at a time.

Or do I let it gap itself in the centre on the visor like double glazing. (not the edges).

I'm worried that the rubber grips on the helmet that normally grip the visor and seals out rain, moves the insert and pulls it away from the adhesive (which are two rectangles at the extreme left and right of the visor, near the sidepod's).

TIA

What kind of insert are we talking here?

If it's a Fog City, I believe they do different ones for visors that curve both ways.

Bit unluckey with the 2 curved part.

I held the sides (where adhesive is) and pushed it into the visor and then secured it, to minimise the gap. A bit trickey. Try not to get a gap between the insert and the visor.

I'm probably just going to get a proper visor, because its hassle taking of and on the inserts, when it gets dark for example... Crying or Very sad

Mine rubbed on the rubber one time, and it was ok. Wind resistance pushes and seales the two quite well.

Its never going to fit perfectly, just bodge it as best as you can. Thumbs Up

Black visor. Carry the clear one for when it's needed.

Well, I have bodged it as best I can, and it's not too bad. Even if I may say so myself.

The absolute centre of the visor is not in contact with the insert, but all the edges seem fine and only time will tell whether or not it will last.

I bought this one from mcmouse (In a pack of two, so if you make a mess you got another go) who was extremely fast with sending it out and in protective packaging with "Do not bend" on it.

Just 36 hours from the time of sending money by Paypal to the time it arrived at my house Thumbs Up

They are alot thicker than I thought and the sticky pads are very sticky.

Cheers mate!

Are you aware of the current situation with visor inserts?

Below is a piece I wrote for a newletter, as a result of my ongoing involvement with a current case.

I don't know if you are aware, but a few weeks ago, one of the major manufacturers and one of the major distributors were fined a total of over £14,000 + over £1,500 each in costs for selling and distributing visor inserts that failed to let in sufficient ambient light.

They were prosecuted on the findings of a silver, gold and blue insert which were found to let in between 3.2 and 7.8% of the ambient light, but the manufacturer was also prosecuted for false representation as they claimed it cut out 50% of the ambient light when in fact it was nearer 96%.

This ruling in simple terms has virtually outlawed the production and sale of visor inserts as it also affects the normal dark tint visor type.

The main issue is on light transmission and colour recognition, and I have just had a call from Bob Heath (some of you may know him as the visor manufacturer) himself and who I have known for some time about this ruling.

The dark visor inserts allow 20% light transmission and complies with all colour recognition tests in respect of category 2 of the light filter requirements, and fits in with the EN1938/98 regs which allows 20% light transmission for motorcycle goggles (that is black), but Trading Standards used the 4110 standard as its comparison not realising that other regulations also applied, (I had a very interesting conversation with trading standards).

So all being well, and with my/our help we are going to challenge this ruling and hopefully get part of the ruling overturned so that motorcyclists can still use reasonable means to protect their eyes when riding in bright conditions legally.

As a by the by, the prosecution of the silver, gold and blue inserts was absolutely right under regulation 15(1) of the general product safety regulations 1994, but it has a knock on affect for everything else as well regardless of colour.

It will be interesting, and I will keep you posted as to how things progress!

thanks for all your efforts TC

but what a crock of shite this is

surely this nazi government have got better things to worry about than bloody visor inserts which are a pretty crappy compromise because they are too stubborn and nannying to allow us to make our own mind up when it is appropriate to wear suitable glare protection in the form of a tinted visor and when it's too dark for one

I'd love to know what they reckon we should wear when travelling directly towards a low sun.

Bunch of cnuts Thumbs Down

(By the way, Fogcity give a handy tip for fitting their inserts. They recommend using post-it notes to mask out the outline of the helmet opening on the visor. That way you can line up the insert with the post-its, stopping your insert being caught in the helmet when shutting the visor) Thumbs Up Handy indeed.

Cheers for the info TC Thumbs Up , does that mean that the Fog City "hyper-optics" fall into this category? Great tip there Kris, will think about it when do purchase my next fog city for my HJC. The adhesive on the films are rather pathetic, and consequently, i just use clear sellotape to tape it on.

The Hyperoptics should be alright as they are light reactive and they really don't get very dark at all. Not like the picture on the front of the pack anyway. Shocked

I bought one recently and it actually came with a sort of stencil that you stick to the outside to line up the fit. Not sure if it only comes with the Hyperoptics though as I bought one of the Pro Shields for my dark visor and it didn't have one in the pack, it might have been old stock though.

I have found that there is quite a lot of back glare with them, especially with the Pro Shield on a dark visor in direct bright sunlight. In fact I've gone back to using anti-fog spray.
