Looking to buy a new set of textile clothing, what's the best value for money out there at the mo.

Just been to a clothing shop and I am looking at Halvarssons but the cost is £700 for the Top, bottoms and gloves. I'm not adverse to paying this if they are worth it.

Ideas greatly appreciated

I use textile jackets and have 2 Alpinestars ones which are great for summer use, however I also have a frank thomas winter one which is very warm (cost about £80 if memory serves), although I've heard negative reports on performance in pouring rain.

Personally I'd try on anything under £100 (Hein Gericke / local dealers) and get whatever is the most comfy. A must would be the ability to zip to trousers / jeans (could always get a zip sewn to jacket / jeans).

edit: i think ther's a large bike dealership near Oxford that has a large Alpinestars section (along with a few others), alternatively George Whites in Swindon. Not sure if those are anywhere near you.

Value for money depends on how many miles you do.
If you are only going to do a few, then look at the cheaper end. If you are doing a lot of miles on a regular basis. Then look at the more expensive stuff. That can wear better.

Having said that I have just replaced my over 5 year old Richa jacket (£99) It was still going strong, used pretty much 5 days a week for 20 mile commute, but I felt the need of a change.

The best one, is the one that fits you perfectly; does everything you want it to do, and has protection in the right places. Thumbs Up

i tend to wear tracksuit bottoms underneath jeans and that will stop my legs hitting numbness for at least 3-5 hours believe it or not . then again all of my jeans are pretty oily perhaps that adds an extra element of wind protection lol i had some textile trousers once i think they cost me in the region of 30 pounds had hip knee and weather proof protection . they were actually very good kept me warm and dry . i think they were a brand called KOORD i remember they were cheap but effective .

My Frank Thomas XTI 2's have served me really well.

Also a lot cheaper now than when I purchased them last year Laughing

I've got Halvarssons gear, fits me well so maybe i'm just the right build? Never wet, hardly ever cold so would sing their praises every time.

Avoid the gloves though, lining ripped and gets a but chilly. But jacket and trousers are spot on. (albeit expensive)

I've got a pair of Lidls trousers that have served me well for two years and a Rev 'it jacket. The jacket is amazing, warm, comfortable, waterproof and breathable. I can't remember the model but it cost me around £170. Looking to get a pair of trousers for Christmas so I'll be watching this thread too.

I have the XTI 2, excellent for wind and cold weather, but as long as it doesn't rain. Run for cover if it does Smile

Depends if you're planning to bin it.

Shocked

Errr... wow. Have you considered trying to score some used ones?

Alternatively, if you're genuinely concerned about safety, have you considered an airbag jacket or vest? It'll come in a lot cheaper than the Halvarsson, and while the abrasion protection might not be as good, it'll offer at least a chance of better impact protection.

Hein Gericke gear is pretty good, for that £700 you could get leather and goretex kit, you don't need to spend that much though.

What sort of riding do you do and on what bike?

I've got a Suzuki V-strom and I'm hoping to do a bit of touring on it next year hopefully through europe,
I'm not intending on binning it at any point but you just never know, i've been rididng for 20 years now and I've only been hit by one drunk driver, never came off from my own accord.

I'm not that bothered about riding in the rain either but obviously when I do i'll need something to keep it out.

Well, to paraphrase Best: "I spent a lot of my money on bikes, birds and cars...the rest I just wasted."

I imagine when you're surfing down the Autobahn, that £700 will be the best value purchase you ever made. Wink

Oh well always next new years Laughing

The only place mine have leaked is in my *cough* crutch area Shocked

I would imagine this to be more because water tends to sit there with no wind to get rid of it.

Just asking for it now!!! Lulz Smile But I shall resist!

Anyway, my jacket is just awful - sleeves, chest and back get soaked during regular rain .. Don't wanna know in case of downpour.

But I bought myself a 1 piece waterproof suit for £10 and it's nice and dandy.

Personally I'd advice to check out big brands. Wouldn't go cheap for a suit anymore!

The kit of choice among the adventure travel & "strom"trooper fraternity has to be Klim https://www.klim.com/en-us/moto.
The uk outlet for this stuff is Adventure-spec https://www.adventure-spec.com in west yorkshire.
You'll easily spend £700+ on a quality suit, and probably £700+ on the jacket alone

Clothing is all a learning curve.. some bits you get right some you dont.
HG and Alpinstars normally have good write ups and are sort of middle of the road stuff.

If you will be using the clothing frequently and are not too constrained by purchase price then from personal experience I would recommend Rukka. This kit also comes with a five year warranty.

I've got a HG textile jacket which has been good so far and at the moment I'm considering getting some Klim Traverse trousers - I'm probably going to go and have a look at some in a week or so and see if they're worth the £££.

+1
I got my gear from HG, jacket, trousers and gloves for about £300, they always seem to give a discount when you buy the whole lot. When I got mine, I also got a lid and saved about £60 in total.

So far the kit has been totally water-proof, and their shelltex and goretex are both guaranteed (2 and 5 years, i think)

Hope this helps

Depending on what you want from a set of gear, you could consider gore tex.

It's good in winter to keep warm but also cool in summer with infills taken out. It's very comfortable and keeps me warm and dry. Is also waterproof and doesn't soak in the water, just rolls off.

Jacket and trousers together were £490 but I'm riding 5 days a week commuting est 40 miles a day then can always wear instead of my leathers on a cold Saturday or Sunday.

For me it's good quality performs and lasts but each to their own.

This is where I got mine:
