Apparently a metal floor plate covering a movement joint on the flyover came loose forming a six inch high wedge...

This subsequently took out a bike and a van. I hear the rider was motionless and police accident investigators are on the scene.

Horrific by the sounds of it. Neutral

Oo that doesn't sound good! Hope the biker and the van driver both have a speedy recovery.

came past about 8.30....looked bad and the fact that the road was still closed five hours later leads me to believe this might be a fatal

not nice....second bike accident I have ridden past in two days (yesterday was on the same stretch of the A40 near Gypsey Corner)

Nasty - glad I'm working from home today as that is the route I would have taken in otherwise.

Must send an email to some colleagues to make sure it wasn't them.

Any info on the type of bike?

Yay, it's another 'random motorcyclist gets injured' thread for the resident BCF ghouls/vultures/rubber-neckers.

I think the OP is right to post....if it does nothing other than warn riders of an inherent danger that they may not be aware of (ie the massive wooden slabs that have been lying in the middle of the eastbound A40 since Monday because of weekend work that overran) then what is the harm???

I saw on the travel news that the flyover was closed due to a motorcycle accident and subsequent investigation (never a good sign) so I took the M4 route this morning.

I commuted via the A40 in the summer and hardly saw any incidents. I’ve now been taking this route daily since the end of Sept and I’ve seen five accidents involving bikes with at least one of them being a fatality.

The last few days there have been some massive wooden ramps covering some of the expansion grates on the approach to the flyover. I wonder if one of those came loose or if it was actually one of the metal grates themselves.

Wasn't anyone I know from work which is good.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those ramps, people don't slow down for them and they have quite a kick to them at 50+mph. Can't imagine it would take much for one of them to become loose, they were very rattly yesterday when I rode over them.

Endless swathes of motherfudging legislation about bike safety and licensing, and we're driving on Goddamn wooden roads. Mad

We're a post-industrial economy with a transport network that's regressing towards the medieval.

I had my Hornet slip out a couple of times going over those metal grates on the A40. Not fun.

The A40 was closed once because a biker had crashed and be-headed himself. The workman putting out the cones to close the slip roads said he'd been carrying a lock around his neck, crashed, and got it caught on the central reservation, causing it to rip through his neck. Shocked

I hit the first one hard when they were first put in, It was raining and I didn't see any warning signs. I actually swore to myself afterwards. Saw the second one after the flyover.

The problem with the rams is that the edges don't sit flush to the road, bloody dangerous if you ask me.

Well let's be fair it's not an everyday type accident and possibly (only from what I've heard, admittedly) could be down to the road surface and condition of metal plates. Peeps that commute that way and have to deal with these plates may be interested.
At least it wasn't a 'what makes a genuine biker? thread... Wink

No pictures, but I would say they are maybe as high as about 4 or 5 inches and maybe two feet wide with a bevelled edge. They stretch across the whole width of the road. They seem to be wood coated with a high grip surface and make an almighty bang as you hit them. I’ve been taking them standing up on the pegs to avoid a rectal prolapse.

Those dimensions could be way out, but I've not taken my eyes off the traffic long enough to make a detailed inspection. Wink

ditto to all of that (except the rectal prolapse bit)

they are pretty uncomfortable when you hit them at anything over 30-40mph

Its not about rubbernecking, its about not missing news about someone who might one day be someone you know - but that nobody who knows them, know that YOU know them.

(if you catch my drift)

Thanks for the heads up and I'll make a note to watch out for that. I play fives at the Westway. I haven't been down there for a couple of months due to injury but am usually there every Wednesday and will be back next Wednesday.

I was due to be there last night but had some bike issues.

Jesus. That kind of stuff makes me go cold and I'll definitely take a different route to the Westway.

I hope the biker is OK.

The A40 seemed to reopen briefly yesterday after the investigations and temporary repairs finished, but was closed again by late afternoon. By the time I passed in the opposite direction there was a massive force of roadworkers beavering away at the area where the ramps were installed. I expect to see them all gone this morning.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-15680379

Looks like the road is all open and flowing well again. Hope the guy recovers and gets handsomely compensated by the contractors who left the road in such a shocking state.
