Filtering through traffic at 22mph (traffic stationary) at the end of the A20 on approach towards Kidbrooke.....

Some twat in the passenger seat of a car in the fast lane throws open door and climbs out............on go the brakes and horn.... starting to slide all over the place (thanks to the lovely bright white lines - local council painted down middle of the road)..... guy throws himself back against the side of the car, and leaves door wide open (clever chap - dickhead)

Anyways, luckily front wheel locks up and slides off the white line to the left causing the bike to lurch away from the door and all I hear was a little tap as the mirror caught the top corner.

I launched a sea of verbal abuse at the guy and was oh so close to headbutting the twat, but refrained myself, due to the fact of so many witnesses.

Anyway, made it in OK.....phew !!!!
Thumbs Up

Were you undertaking or going between 2 lanes of traffic.

Either way, you have discovered the increased risk of doing either.

Filter down the outside and leave enough room, where possible, for doors to open and not obstruct you. Where this is not possible, go slowly enough to stop comfortably when someone does!

Crikey. Well done for saving it - and it's good you didn't get violent. Letting the filth flow from your mouth after your sphincter puckers shut is definitely more preferable to flying fists.

Car-door chap will probably be extra-careful when getting out of vehicles for the rest of his days now, too.

Is there anything else you could've done to prevent it? I'm not saying there definitely is, but sometimes it helps to go over the situation after you've cooled off. I don't tend to filter too swiftly in situations like yours after the exact same thing almost happened to me on the North Circular once.

Loud exhaust pipes seem to stop this happening for me.

The pipes on the TRX are loud enough to rattle the glass in car windows Laughing

Ive been through a drivers side window on a pushbike when someones opened it on me.

I always slow down when filtering, and move over when couriers and the more impatient people wanna pass.

Its not worth the risk and the damage to ride too progressively through stationary traffic. It probably wasnt that big of a skid, but time slows down when these things happen, and it makes you think you had time to react differently.

22 mph was pretty slow and the road is pretty wide, else I would have hit his door.

Shook me up a bit, but angered me more I think.

At least I may have helped the masses, when it comes to this berk wanting to exit the vehicle on an busy A road next time.

My god, another case of some idiot painting white lines between two lanes? That's the second one today! Wink

Well, good on you for saving it. I'm not sure there is an entirely safe speed to filter at, you could have a door opened two inches in front of your face.

For all the money that manufacturers put into brakes, ABS and suspension set ups, you think they could spunk £10 on fitting a little device to shout "This vehicle is filtering. WAKE UP, YOU DOZY PLANKS!"

Opening of doors

No person shall open, or cause or permit to be opened, any door of a vehicle on a road so as to injure or endanger any person.

It's an offence under law, you could have called the police seeing as there were a number of witnesses, I probably would have under the circumstances.

Surely that regulation means you're not allowed to open in to cause injury?
Not just opening of the door..

Probably not worth going the extra step of going hands on with him, especially since there are two of them and one of you, and they could have a weapon hidden in the car, or something that could be used as such, and you don't.
