I found yesterday thatwith controlled counter steering I can get a lot closer to the ground, is it pretty much essential?

It is essential for turning a bike. Just a lot of people don't realise they do it.

The only time I really force counter steering is in chicanes or on very fast corners where you really need to battle against physics.

is it worth specifically trying to counter steer further to get lower and turn quicker, or is that too risky?

It is worth practicing, will help improve your general riding and could save your ass if you take a corner a bit too quick.

Very Happy Here's me thinking, why would you have a donkey on the pillion seat Laughing

Counter steering is useful, as is looking where you're going, that is around the corner, not at it Wink vanishing point and all that

I have to admit I purposefully used counter steering on my way to work, wow what a difference. I felt more confident on my turns and felt much more relaxed.

it needs to be done a bit more on bigger bikes though in my opinion thought. as on my 50 i could chuck the bike around anywhere and it would just go no questions asked, using the same force on a 400 does absolutely nothing and until someone told me you have to put a bit more effort in with a bigger bike i would still be taking corners and stupidly slow speeds and just been a general danger on the roads as id never think the bike could move quick enough to avoid problems :/

when you turn the wheel right to turn left, im not sure but im guessing it works somehow due to the tilt of bike wheels, whereas car wheels are flat, bikes are curved and so you can lean them...not sure totally..

It's all to do with gyroscopic forces - ever go to the science museum and they have you hold a bicycle wheel. If you spin the wheel and try to turn it to the left, you will feel it try to push down your right arm.

Same principle....

Should have asked about it last weekend. It's real easy. Taking those roads we were doing means you were already doing it. Unless you were slowing down to less 15mph on every bend. But I know you weren't.

I found it handy to use hard countersteering in the early days of GYKD as it also alerted me to how far a bike can lean. I've since used this method in several "Oh SHIT Shocked " moments and forced the bike round when I really shouldn't have got away with it.

Thumbs Up

Definetely. Hard countersteering has got me out of a few hairy situations where I should have been off the side of the road, or into oncoming traffic. Shocked

It's good if you want a tighter line through a corner thus faster and lower.

Um. Blasted wet mini-roundabout Evil or Very Mad , lost and getting pissed off in a residential estate, leant over just the same as I had done for all the rest of the bastard things. The front just went from under me, now I've got matching slide damage on both sides... Rolling Eyes Almost lost it when I hit a cat's eye on a hairpin bend on the way home too...

Oh, and there were about 20 schoolchildren watching. Embarassed Four really chavvy ones came over to see if I was okay, and even gave me directions out of the hellhole which is Mansfield Woodhouse. I suppose you can't really judge a book entirely on it's cover.
