My mate has a 1995 Yamaha RD 350 sat in his garage and he is thinking of selling it as he hasn't used it for several years and I don't think he would ever get it on the road himself again.

He has no idea what it is worth. Neither do I.

The condition is OK, is will probably need a bit of work as it has been sat for years. I think with a good clean and service it would do it the world of good.

Has no MOT obviously. It is in red and white.
I have always wanted a two stroke like this so I am thinking of discussing with him about purchasing it, but as he is a good friend I want to try and get an idea of a price which would be fair for us both.

I am not buying it to sell on in the near future and would like to spend some time and money getting it back to its former glory.
If I buy it and ever end up selling it he would always get first refusal at a fair price.

So BCF, can you give me an idea of price on this bike?

I have searched online and have not found a specific RD350 mirage listed.
It says mirage on the bikes fairing so I assumed this was a model name but now I am not so sure.
I am not familair with the RD 350's so if someone could explain the various types/models I would be greatful.

Thumbs Up

When someone says ''I have no idea what it's worth'' it means they hope you think it's more valuable than it is, and will make a high offer.

Any fucktard can eBay something and work out from there. Sounds like he's trying his luck.

I didn't think they were still making those in 1995. I presume it's an RD350YPVS F2

I had one of the first powervalves that came out, it was an old X-reg (1981). They were utterly banzai in a way that has not been seen since.

The later ones were made in Brazil and by all accounts weren't as good.

A 350YPVS would be near the top of my motorcycle bucket list but they have attracted a lot of unwanted (undeserved?) "classic" patina meaning they are generally overpriced for what they are.

On the plus side, they share an engine with the banshee quad bike so parts are available along with the most utterly rediculous spectrum of tuning parts ever assembled (I think they go up to a 620cc conversion!) Shocked (mine had a 375cc stage 3 tune and was bordering on totally uncontrollable, it had renthall drag bars fitted so you could hold the front wheel down some of the time)

I have made no indication to him that I am interested in buying it. So he isn't trying to sell it to me in anyway or expecting me to make an offer.

He has had it in his garage for years and I have seen it when I been helping him out with something else.

He has recently replaced the fuel tap as it was leaking (which I sourced for him), which is one of the reasons he hasn't even started it for years.
When I asked him how he got on with the repair, he went on to say he is thinking of selling it soon and wanted to get an idea as to the value.

He really is not an expert on bikes, it is just something he bought years ago and then stopped riding and has been sat idle in the garage ever since.
I have recently thought to myself about buying it but wanted to have an idea of price so I could approach him with at least an idea of what it is worth to start negotiations.
He is a really good friend so there is no way he will want to over charge me as equally I would not want to give him an unfair price.

I just want an idea of price as a starting point. I have looked on ebay and I can find a few RD 350s but they are all earlier ones. I even checked completed listing. I have only found one so far on the internet from a dealer which was the same years but was described as an RD 350 YPVS, rather than a RD 350R which he has.

Its a 1995 RD 350R, I got the model number when I sourced a fuel tap for him.

Having checked a picture, it's definately a 350 powervalve, so my previous comments still stand.

Nope, but it's a fair bit less than they sell for.

Ay, there's the rub.

The 350R is the bike they built in Brazil, then Mitsui brought them over here, because we bought more LCs than almost anyone else.

I wasn't aware they were still bringing them in by 1995, but it's possible this is a bike that sat on the showroom floor for a while, because even the Brits had moved on and the LC was seriously old news by then.

It should be worth 500 quid, but you can see it making 4 figures on the bay, even though it's not the model to have and it has the potential to cost a small fortune to restore, depending on how high a standard you want to do it to.

its defo a 350r the dog of the ypvs bikes. a disgrace to be branded the same as a 31k or a 1ua bike (f2/n2)

lower compression , restrictive exhausts etc , id say max of 900

and that f2 liked on visor down for 800 that now in this days market would sell for 1400+ all day

Cheers,

I will try and get pictures in the next couple of weeks when I next see him.
At least the figures everyones quoting are in the region of what I would want to spend. I fancy a bit of a project but don't want to spend to much on the bike initially.
As for restoration I am not planning on going crazy just making sure its mechanically sorted and tidy. I imagine it will need a bit of work to be mechanically sound due to being stood for so long.

Never buy a bike from a good friend, let alone a non-runner.

Offer to take it off him, build it up, and if it's all straight you buy it. If it has some dodgy signs of impending doom, sell it on fleabay and just recoup your costs from the sale.

Best way.
