I've been rebuilding an old FZX 750 Yamaha for my mate. Its a thank you for all the help he gives me when I'm working on the old nails I pick up to refurb. I promised him an MOT'd and taxed bike at the end of the build. No problems with the MOT, Swinton added the bike to my insurance for a small fee so I was 'legitimate' when I called into the Post Office to get it taxed.
Unfortunately, I was told that only the registered owner could tax the bike. I did point out, politely, that the bike was insured and MOT'd, current log book etc. No, catagorically, only the owner could tax it.
Got home, went on the Directgov site, more in hope than anger, punched in the details, five minutes later its taxed!
I know there have been other threads about this topic, just thought I'd add my experience.
BTW, the rebuild has its own litany of horrors to impart, when I've got a little more time.

I presume so, its just that Miguel didn't want to go to the cost of insuring it at the moment and I need it legal to do the finishing roads tests. (After various discoveries when riding it to the MOT garage).

Rubbish. People go and tax vehicles for other people all the time. Two weeks ago a friend agreed to lend me his car for a couple of months, but it had no tax or MoT. He added me to the insurance he already had running, then I got it MoTed and took the MoT 'receipt' with an inkjet-printed copy of the insurance certificate, along with the V5C, to a Post Office and 5 minutes later walked out with a tax disc.

Keeper, not owner, and just tell whatever lie you need to to get it done.

It's definitely possible because when I bought my bike my Dad got it taxed for me whilst I was at college. Bike is registered to me and I'm the registered keeper - the insurance is also in my name and I'm the only one on the policy.

Not sure what he had to say to get it done though. I imagine it varies in success depending on the post office though.

The problem is that you all had the V5 and insurance in the same name, whereas jjdugen didn't.

You can take someone else's paperwork to the post office and tax a vehicle no problem, but they won't accept a different name on the V5 to the one on the insurance. Not sure why, as the keeper is not necessarily the owner - even the V5 says that!

yambabe's point is correct. But the DVLA dont seem to make that distinction, so why should the Post office? One hand not knowing the other methinks.
