The dealership may keep it for a short while, but it's unlikely they'd keep it for a number of months

You'd have to ask them. From brief anecdotal experience, the local dealers seemed fairly happy to sit on their stock through winter anyway, so they might go for it.

Don't be surprised if they keep advertising "your" bike at a knockdown price, to get people in the door, then they can say "Oh, sorry, that one has just sold, but if you want to look over here..."

And don't be astonished if they go ahead and sell "your" bike to someone else even if you've put down a deposit. If you put money down, take the V5 (and plugs or CDI or similar) away with you. Heck, we've seen dealerships sell bikes that were just in for a service, let alone ones that they have title to. Shocked

If you do find a dealer that will agree to sell a bike to you and hold onto it for several months, make sure that at least some of the deposit is paid using a credit card. That way if the dealer's business goes tits up then at least your deposit will be safe.

This, winter is the quiet time so if they're going to go tits up it'll normally be then. You'd have to be unlucky but using a card at least gives you some protection.

I know a few dealers that I reckon would do this, just have a chat with them and see what they say. I've always found bike dealers more accomodating than car places.

And don't expect said dealer to give you back your deposit when april comes around and you have changed your mind/found another bike, etc etc

They will want every penny out of you they can get!

Wouldn't bother myself. Too much scope for potential cock ups.

They'll be plenty of nice bikes around in April if that's when you're looking to buy.
